Want a career that allows you to explore and express your creative side as well as apply your business intelligence? Then a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Furnishings Merchandising is right for you. The University of North Texas is one of the few universities in the nation that offers this degree program.
As a home furnishings merchandiser, you may be involved in creating, developing, sourcing, manufacturing and merchandising products within the broad categories of home furnishings and decorative accessories. Your career path could lead to work with:
Our graduates work at many of the home furnishings and decorative accessory-related companies in the region as well as at home centers for major national retailers, at specialty companies, in their own businesses or in wholesale showrooms.
The Home Furnishings Merchandising program will teach you how to apply merchandising strategies in a consumer-driven global market. Faculty members work closely with professionals in the Dallas-Fort Worth home furnishings industry tailoring the program to meet the profession’s needs.
Our program utilizes the latest technology in the classroom, including several computer-aided design programs. We are one of the few universities in the nation to own Mockshop software, which is utilized by international retailers and used to create layouts and plans for store concepts.
By enrolling in classes with other Merchandising majors, you gain an understanding of the growing industry phenomenon of brand extension across apparel and home furnishings products.
The Executive-in-Residence program hosts executives for lectures and meetings to share their perspectives and experiences. The Merchandising Inc. student organization and the annual Merchandising Expo present other networking opportunities.
You can earn 3 credit hours through a merchandising study tour. Class destinations include New York City and Dallas touring showrooms, manufacturing facilities, retail establishments, museums and significant historical structures. Study abroad programs, in places such as Hong Kong/China, Korea and India, provide international exposure to the industry.

You will develop drawing skills using hand and computer methods, create and interpret floor plans, learn to estimate for materials and finishes, and apply basic business and merchandising principles. The college also requires an internship to be completed before graduation.

We encourage you to fulfill the graduation requirements for the Texas Recommended or Distinguished Achievement Program or the equivalent in high school.
In your junior year, take the SAT or the ACT and have your scores sent to UNT.
In your senior year, apply for admission at www.applytexas.org by March 1 and request that your high school transcript be sent to the UNT admissions office.
