As one of the largest and most comprehensive music schools in the nation, the University of North Texas’ College of Music provides many opportunities for you to enjoy our musical heritage. These avenues include:
We invite you to explore all that the College of Music has to offer.
Our musical performances range from concerts by student groups to those featuring internationally known guest artists. The college presents more than 1,000 programs each year. Many of the events are presented in the Murchison Performing Arts Center, which houses the 1,100-seat Winspear Performance Hall and the 400-seat Lyric Theatre. Other concert venues are:
Event listings are available at www.music.unt.edu/calendar.
If you performed in an ensemble while attending high school, you may want to audition for any of our vocal or instrumental ensembles. Being a music major is not a prerequisite for performing in any of our ensembles. Auditions are held the week before classes begin each fall and spring semester. You can earn 1 elective credit hour toward your bachelor’s degree while in an ensemble, which rehearses from four to six hours each week.
Several of these ensembles perform on national and international tours and release recordings.
Courses focusing on music appreciation, music theory, 19th- and 20th-century music, and music cultures of the world are available to all students. These courses fulfill the visual and performing arts requirement or the humanities requirement of the university’s core curriculum. For detailed information about the courses, consult the UNT Undergraduate Catalog at www.unt.edu/catalog.
With permission from the college, you can also enroll in applied lessons for 1 credit hour. More information about enrolling in a music course or taking applied lessons is available by contacting the College of Music’s Undergraduate Advising Office at 940-369- 7771.
