Opportunities in Music

As one of the largest and most comprehensive music schools in the nation, the University of North Texas’ College of Music provides many opportunities for you to enjoy our musical heritage. These avenues include:

  • Attending recitals and concerts
  • Performing in a vocal or instrumental ensemble
  • Enrolling in music courses
  • Taking private lessons

We invite you to explore all that the College of Music has to offer.

Concerts and recitals

Our musical performances range from concerts by student groups to those featuring internationally known guest artists. The college presents more than 1,000 programs each year. Many of the events are presented in the Murchison Performing Arts Center, which houses the 1,100-seat Winspear Performance Hall and the 400-seat Lyric Theatre. Other concert venues are:

  • Stan Kenton Hall
  • Merrill Ellis Intermedia Theater
  • Recital Hall
  • Voertman Hall
  • University Union
  • Main Auditorium

Event listings are available at www.music.unt.edu/calendar.

Performance opportunities

If you performed in an ensemble while attending high school, you may want to audition for any of our vocal or instrumental ensembles. Being a music major is not a prerequisite for performing in any of our ensembles. Auditions are held the week before classes begin each fall and spring semester. You can earn 1 elective credit hour toward your bachelor’s degree while in an ensemble, which rehearses from four to six hours each week.

Several of these ensembles perform on national and international tours and release recordings.
