What we offer

We provide the only Religious Studies degree program at a public university in the region. All of the religions examined are treated equally, encouraging open, thought provoking dialogue among students and faculty members. In addition, you gain a thorough understanding of the beliefs, practices and histories of multiple religious traditions and can hone your oral and written communication skills.

The program’s interdisciplinary approach allows you to focus your studies on a particular area of interest. Courses are available in a wide variety of disciplines including philosophy, English, history, anthropology, sociology and many others.

Our faculty members have expertise in religious studies and the philosophy of religion. Their research has examined:

  • Ancient Israel and religious history
  • Jewish philosophy
  • Religion and the environment
  • Religion, culture and film in South Asia
  • Science, technology and religion

What to expect

While pursuing your degree, the course work will address areas such as:

  • Historical, cultural and conceptual origins and development of world religions
  • How religion is similar to and different from philosophy, literature, sociology and anthropology
  • How to understand religions objectively
  • How to apply knowledge of religions to local and global issues
  • The influence of religions on politics, law, science and the arts

How to enroll at Unt

High school students

We encourage you to fulfill the graduation requirements for the Texas Recommended or Distinguished Achievement Program or the equivalent in high school.

In your junior year, take the SAT or the ACT and have your scores sent to UNT.

In your senior year, apply for admission at www.applytexas.org by March 1 and request that your high school transcript be sent to the UNT admissions office.

Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses can count toward college credit at UNT. For details, visit www.unt.edu/credit.

Transfer students

If you’re attending a Texas community college, you should consult our Transfer Articulation web page, the UNT Undergraduate Catalog and an academic counselor/advisor to review your degree plan. Proper planning will help you receive the maximum amount of transfer credits.

Our Transfer Center will help you make a successful transition to college life at UNT by connecting you with a peer mentor and other campus resources. More than 3,500 students transfer to UNT each year. The center is in the University Union, Room 320. More information is at transition.unt.edu.
