UNT is located with convenient and strategic access to the most rapidly growing corridors in North Texas.
More than any other university in North Texas, UNT can and must be ready to respond to increasing and
changing demand for higher education. Over 65% of the Metroplex growth in the next 20 years will occur
above the area of LBJ Freeway (Dallas County) and North Loop 820 (Fort Worth / Tarrant County).
This growth will be in the form of major businesses, including advanced technology industries, and
major residential areas. The growth will include a diverse balance of all income types, family types,
and job classifications. The demand for continuing and perpetual education will dramatically increase. |

- Provide for a 50% Growth of Facility Space
The campus master plan should provide for a 50% growth capacity for facilities on
the main campus.
- Some growth capacity is needed to make up for current space
deficiencies
- Some growth capacity is based on a 25% to 35% growth in
students that could occur during the next 20 years.
- Some growth capacity is needed to respond to unforeseen
disciplines and programs that will undoubtedly emerge over the next few years.
- It is estimated that the Dallas / Forth Worth Metroplex will
grow by more than 30% during the next 20 years.
- In the knowledge and perpetual learning age, UNT must
provide flexible responses to demands in education. The educational demand will include
traditional undergraduate and graduate coursework, targeted trainingprograms, continuing
education, and special conferences and seminars. Education will have to be delivered on
the main campus, at businesses, at "satellite campuses", and digitally to the
student at home. Many courses will combine several of these venues.
- Off Main Campus Locations in the Metroplex
Off main campus sites will be more important in the future. Sites in North Dallas
and North/Alliance Airport vicinity in Forth Worth will be needed. Providing convenience for
the metropolitan students is a critical factor for UNT to serve future education needs.
- Take Full Advantage of Digital Communications for
Convenience of Students
Ongoing improvements in the technology of digital communication will continue to cause big
changes in how information is conveyed between the teacher and student and student to
student. The impact of this technology on the amount of campus and facility growth is not
yet clear. So far, digital communication breakthroughs have not significantly reduced
demand for on-campus space and facilities. One thing is certain, almost all new and old
facilities will need to have maximum capacity for "bandwidth" and maximum
flexibility to "connect" and adjust to the ongoing improvements to end-user
devices. Increased student convenience and reductions in the amount of unproductive travel
times are important advantages to be gained. UNT must fully use these new technologies to
enhance learning and convenience for students.
