Denton Responds |
Emergency Operations Center (EOC) |
| Saturday, Sept 3, 2005 |
The City of Denton activated it Emergency Operations Center (EOC) today at around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3, when they received word that some buses of evacuees were en route. Several City Staff members deployed to the EOC and some went to the Civic Center because we received word that Salvation Army volunteers showed up there ready to prepare meals for any arrivals. At approximately 1:30 p.m. 5 buses carrying 314 evacuees arrived at Camp Copass. The Salvation Army volunteers and City staff were moved from the Civic Center to Camp Copass to assist with processing and meal preparation.
At the same time, the United Way of Denton County organized volunteers at a warehouse (109 Walnut) to collect donations of bedding, food, water and various other items. These items were loaded onto pick-up trucks and moved to Camp Copass in preparation for the arrival of evacuees. The Denton Record Chronicle, Dallas Morning News and KNTU 88.1 FM were out at Camp Copass and stories will appear tomorrow.
The United Way of Denton County will be collecting donation at their warehouse again tomorrow (Sunday) from 1 to 5 p.m. for the following: money, bottle water, non-perishable food, toiletries, mattresses, sheets, cots, blankets, pillows, sleeping bags, and air mattresses. We are also updating information on the City's website as information becomes available.
The City's EOC was deactivated shortly before 5:00 p.m.
Attached are some photos of the activities at the United Way warehouse and at Camp Copass.
