The University Union celebrated its birthday at the annual Union Fest March 10 with the theme "A Tropical Paradise." Cooks prepared a very large — and free — cake to share with students, staff and faculty.

Sometimes feeling like nuts and sometimes not, students sang the Almond Joy/Mounds jingle in auditions held on campus April 8 for an upcoming commercial.

The annual Spring Fling April 14, sponsored by the University Program Council Traditions Committee, provided an afternoon of carnival fun on campus as the semester neared its end.

From left, Mickey Burnim ('70, '72 M.A.) and Howard Johnson, provost and vice president for academic affairs, attended the annual Honors Day ceremony April 16. Burnim, chancellor of Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina, was the guest speaker at the event, which honors outstanding students.

Renowned poet Maya Angelou spoke at the UNT Coliseum April 20. After her presentation, sponsored by the Division of Equity and Diversity, she was awarded an honorary doctor of humane letters degree.

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison spoke at the spring commencement ceremony May 8. About 2,000 students earned their degrees.

Memorial Day was observed on campus May 31 at the Shrader Pavilion. Richard Wells, professor of journalism and rear admiral in the naval reserve, spoke at the ceremony.
