About Orientation

Q: What is orientation and why is it mandatory?

A: Orientation is a program all undergraduate students must attend prior to enrolling in classes at the University of North Texas.  Orientation is the first step to a successful experience at UNT.  You will become familiar with academic and other important resources, while receiving academic advising and registering for classes.  Orientation is also an opportunity to build relationships with orientation leaders, other new students, and various faculty and administrators.

Q: When is orientation?

A: Orientation for students starting classes in the fall occurs throughout the summer, from June through August.  For students starting school in the spring, orientation occurs in December and January. Summer session students will attend orientation during the summer.  Please refer to the orientation webpage and brochures for exact dates.  If you cannot attend any of the orientations listed, please contact the Office of New Student Programs at (940) 369-8397.

Q: I am a non-traditional, first time college student what do I do?

A: If you are a non-traditional student and will be attending UNT as a freshman, please contact our office at (940) 565-4198 to learn more about your orientation options.  Non-traditionally-aged transfer students will attend a regular transfer orientation session.

Q: I am an international student; do I need to attend orientation?

A: Yes, international students will attend an international student orientation AND a university orientation.  For more information regarding international student orientation, contact the International Office at (940) 565-2197 or visit their website at www.international.unt.edu/.

Q: I am a second Bachelors student; do I need to attend orientation?

A: Students seeking a second Bachelors degree are not required to attend orientation.  You need to apply for admission through the Graduate School and contact your academic department for advising.

New Student Orientation Registration

Q: When will I receive materials, and be able to register, for orientation?

A: Brochures will be mailed to all ACCEPTED students on the following schedule: Fall admission – brochures will be available in March; Spring admission – brochures will be available in November; and Summer admission – brochures will be available in April.  On-line registration at www.unt.edu/orientation will correspond to the mailing of the brochure.

Q: When should I register for orientation?

A: Because all orientation sessions are capped and space is awarded on a first come, first served basis, we strongly encourage you to register for orientation as soon as it becomes available to you.  If we are unable to honor your first orientation session request, we will attempt to place you in your second or third option.

Q: How do I register for orientation?

A: To register for orientation you will need to fill out a student reservation form, which you will receive in the mail after you are accepted, and mail it into our office. You can also register on line at www.unt.edu/orientation.

Q: Will I get confirmation once I have registered for orientation?

A: Yes, confirmation cards, with your assigned orientation date, are mailed out on a regular basis. Students should receive a confirmation card approximately a week after mailing in their registration form or registering online. If you do not receive a confirmation card and your orientation date is approaching please call us at (940) 565-4198 to confirm your orientation date.

Q: Can family members attend Orientation?

A: Yes.  Family members are encouraged to attend.  Family member orientation is designed specifically for parents, guardians, and spouses of new students.  No programming exists for children, however, they are allowed to attend with other family members.  The orientation schedules incorporate time for students and family members to be together at some point each day of orientation.  Family registration materials are included in the new student orientation brochure.  Additional information can be located at www.unt.edu/parents.

Q: When should I make travel arrangements to attend orientation?

A: Because all orientation sessions are capped and space is awarded on a first come, first served basis, we may not be able to honor your first orientation session selection.  Therefore, please do NOT make any travel arrangements until you have received a confirmation card from our office. We will not be able to place you in a closed session just because you have made travel arrangements, so please wait to hear from us!

Q: When do I pay for orientation?

A: You must provide payment with your reservation in order to secure a spot in an orientation session.  Payment can be in the form of a check, credit card, or money order.  On-line registration must be accompanied by a credit card payment. Registration forms not accompanied by payment cannot be processed.

Q: What does my Orientation fee cover?

A: Your fee is used for program implementation and staffing, orientation publications, room & board, and facilities used during orientation.  The fee also provides for year-round orientation programming for all first year students.

Q: What if I cannot pay for my orientation?

A: Financial constraints will not prohibit you from attending orientation.  The Office of New Student Programs offers fee deferment and fee waivers to students who have applied for financial aid and have met certain eligibility requirements. To qualify, you will need to send us a letter explaining your circumstances and we may either waive your fee or defer your payment depending on your situation. Please be as specific as possible regarding your financial situation, so that we can determine the best plan of action.

Q: Can I change my orientation session?

A:  Yes, if space is available. You will receive one complimentary session change. A $15.00 administrative charge will be assessed for all additional session changes. To request a session change, contact our office at (940) 565-4198.

Q: If I have paid and registered for my orientation session and decide not to attend North Texas, is my fee refundable?

A: All orientation fees are non-refundable, including Parent Orientation fees. If you have an extenuating circumstance, you will need to contact our office at (940) 565-4198.

Q: Where should I call to arrange accommodations for a disability?

A: Please contact the Office of Disability Accommodation at (940) 565-4323 or TTY (940) 369-8652 at least TWO WEEKS prior to your orientation session.

Q: Do I need to turn in immunization records before I can attend orientation?
