Fraternities and sororities, also known as the Greek community, have existed at the University of North Texas for more than 50 years. The Greek community will offer you a unique balance of leadership, academics, philanthropy/service and social opportunities that will enhance your college experience. National studies conducted annually indicate that students who join Greek-letter organizations:
UNT has chapters of 17 national fraternities. The Interfraternity Council (IFC) represents 12 fraternities: Alpha Tau Omega, Delta Sigma Phi, Kappa Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Kappa Sigma, Lambda Chi Alpha, Lambda Theta Phi, Phi Kappa Sigma, Sigma Chi, Sigma Nu, Sigma Phi Epsilon and Theta Chi.
The Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) represents Sigma Lambda Beta and Lambda Theta Phi.
The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) represents five historically African American fraternities: Alpha Phi Alpha, Iota Phi Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi and Phi Beta Sigma.
UNT has chapters of 14 national sororities. The Panhellenic Council represents seven National Panhellenic Conference sororities: Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Phi, Chi Omega, Delta Gamma, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Pi Beta Phi and Zeta Tau Alpha.
Three women's groups hold membership in the Multicultural Greek Council: Delta Phi Omega, Lambda Theta Alpha and Sigma Lambda Gamma.
The National Pan-Hellenic Council represents four historically African American sororities: Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho and Zeta Phi Beta.
A primary purpose of the Greek community is to encourage and develop high scholastic achievement among its members. Fraternities and sororities offer many resources and educational opportunities to facilitate high-quality learning.
Academic support includes national and local scholarships, incentives and awards, time management training and workshops, tutoring and mentoring programs, established study sessions and quiet hours, grade point average requirements, available study space and computer access.
Each year, Greek members participate in a variety of UNT organizations and events. Greek life may help you become involved in student government, special interests clubs and organizations, and intramural sports. Finding a balance between academics and social activities is important in your college life, and involvement in both areas will provide you with a well-rounded college experience.
Belonging to a fraternity or sorority does carry a financial obligation. Some costs that you will incur are monthly dues and one-time fees for recruitment, new membership and initiation, and your fraternity or sorority pin. Many fraternities and sororities offer payment plans to assist you with financial obligations.
Through a cooperative relationship with UNT, several fraternities and sororities have houses on campus. Currently, five sororities occupy chapter houses adjacent to campus and another owns a lodge nearby. Additional sorority housing is scheduled to open in the future. Six fraternities own houses adjacent to campus, while one fraternity house is a few blocks from campus.
The Texas Legislature has enacted a law prohibiting hazing at educational institutions. The law also requires that anyone aware of hazing incidents must report them. Failure to comply with the specific provisions of the law will result in criminal penalties and fines. A copy of the law in its entirety is available from the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities or from the Student Activities and Organizations office in the University Union.
For information regarding membership recruitment, please contact the Greek life office at 940-369-8463 or visit the Greek Life Center at 811 S. Welch St.
