Undergraduate Majors and Interests
The College of Business at the University of North Texas offers degree programs for a bachelor of business administration and a bachelor of science. Both degrees will provide you with the professional skills you need for a successful business career, in addition to the specialized training you will receive in your chosen professional field/major. These versatile degrees may also prepare you to open your own business or enter a graduate program.
The College of Business will help you develop the capabilities, knowledge and character to succeed in your chosen field in today’s technological and global business environment. Our students, many of whom work full-time, appreciate our faculty’s “learn today, apply tomorrow” classroom philosophy.
Alumni of the College of Business include chief executive officers of major international and national companies, successful entrepreneurs, partners in accounting and law firms, bank presidents, and leaders of nonprofit organizations.
UNT’s College of Business is one of the 20 largest business colleges in the nation and is accredited by AACSB International —The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (777 South Harbour Island Blvd., Suite 750, Tampa, Fla. 33602, telephone 813-769-6500). This accreditation means the college has passed strict academic standards for excellence in education.
The college offers 30 degree programs for its 5,800 undergraduate and graduate students in the departments of:
You may choose to study accounting, decision sciences, entrepreneurship, finance, financial services, marketing, organizational behavior and human resource management, operations and supply chain management, risk management and insurance, general business, economics, or real estate while pursuing a B.B.A. degree.
In addition to taking courses in your area of study, you will need to complete courses focusing on basic information systems, business communication, business law, business policy, general finance, management and marketing principles, and statistical analysis.
While pursuing a B.S. degree, you may choose to study business computer information systems or logistics and supply chain management. The accounting program offers a five-year combined bachelor’s and master’s degree program. Although the B.S. is a more technical and specialized degree than the B.B.A., you will be required to complete the same general business courses required of B.B.A. students.
Our new Business Leadership Building will heighten your learning experience. Scheduled for completion in 2011, the 180,000 square-foot facility will contain 24 classrooms, team study rooms and a state-of-the-art general access computer lab. This building will help distinguish UNT as a leader in business education for students and executives.
As a student in any business degree program, you may complete an internship with a company in the Dallas-Fort Worth region for 3 hours of course credit.
There also are several useful business organizations that you may join to hone your business skills and make valuable contacts. Delta Sigma Pi fosters the study of business, provides social activities for business students, promotes high business practices and standards, and gives students networking opportunities with business professionals. UNT’s chapter, which began in 1954, sponsors several activities each month, and members may post their resumes on the chapter’s web site.
UNT’s Phi Chi Theta chapter is open to all business students who have completed at least 12 hours and have a minimum 2.8 cumulative GPA. The chapter provides students with a social outlet and networking opportunities. Activities have included field trips to major businesses in the Dallas-Fort Worth region, speakers from top industries, pledge retreats, banquets and opportunities for community service.
UNT also has a chapter of the Hispanic Business Student Association, which offers networking opportunities with business professionals from international corporations. The chapter meets every two weeks.
We encourage you to fulfill the graduation requirements for the Recommended Program or the Distinguished Achievement Program in high school. In your junior year, take the SAT or the ACT and have your scores sent to UNT.
In your senior year, submit your application for admission by March 1 (apply online at www.applytexas.org) and request that your high school transcript be sent to the UNT admissions office.
Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses can count toward college credit at UNT. For details, visit www.unt.edu/credit.
As a benefit for transfer students, UNT participates in the Texas Common Course numbering system. This system makes it easier to transfer credits for general academic courses from one Texas institution to another.
UNT’s Transfer Center will help you make a successful transition to college life at UNT by connecting you to a peer mentor and other valuable campus resources. Each year, we welcome more transfer students than any other institution in the state. The center is in the University Union, Room 320. More information is at www.unt.edu/transferprograms.
You may declare your intention to study any area of business upon enrolling at UNT, but are encouraged to first visit with an advisor in the College of Business. The advisor will help determine if a degree in business is right for you and will help you select a field of study. The academic advising office is in the Business Building, Room 123.
You can also utilize UNT’s new online degree audit system. This interactive tool will help you stay on track for graduation and prepare for advising appointments. The system is easily accessible through my.unt.edu using the “my academics” link on the student center page.
