Career Services

Choosing a career

The University of North Texas has many defining resources available if you are unsure about which degree or career you would like to pursue.

UNT Counseling and Testing Services will help you select a major and identify a potential career. You can talk to a vocational counselor and take written tests to determine which careers fit your interests, abilities and personality.

UNT's Career Center has interactive computer programs that focus on interests and values to help you choose a major and career. You can also meet with a career advisor for assistance in learning about possible careers and appropriate majors. If you are unsure about a major, visit the center early in your college education.

Career development course

Through UNT's College of Arts and Sciences, you can take Career Development (UCRS 2100), a one-semester course that meets for one hour each week. You will learn about careers that match your abilities, interests and values. The course is offered for elective credit and is graded pass/no pass. Full-time student advisors from the College of Arts and Sciences teach the course.

If you have not decided on a major upon enrolling at UNT, you can take Career Development while taking UNT's core courses. Core courses are required for all undergraduate students. You also may want to take courses in one or two academic departments that interest you.

Internships and cooperative education

Once you know what you want to do, UNT will help prepare you for your career by offering internship and cooperative education opportunities.

Companies throughout Texas and the United States contact UNT academic departments seeking interns. Internships are listed through the Cooperative Education and Internships office or are posted on bulletin boards in the academic departments.

Cooperative education integrates classroom theory with practical experience. More than 1,800 employers, including AT&T; EDS; IBM; J.C. Penney Co., Inc.; and Texas Instruments, list positions through the Cooperative Education and Internships office. Most of the companies have offices in the Dallas-Fort Worth region. Paid positions are available for students of most majors.

To participate in cooperative education as an undergraduate, you must complete 12 semester credit hours at UNT with a minimum 2.5 grade point average.

Career services

The Career Center provides you and UNT alumni assistance in researching employment fields and networking with employers. Employment advising includes advice about resume and cover letter writing, interviewing, networking, salary negotiation, job search strategies and career transitions.

The Career Center contains a library with career exploration and job search materials and two online career guidance programs. A 17-seat computer lab is available for producing your resume and researching various resources related to employers, employment opportunities, salary surveys, and supply and demand trend surveys.

Each semester the Career Center sponsors on-campus career fairs that are attended by more than 200 employers. An additional job fair is sponsored annually in the spring if you are seeking a teaching career.

Seminars on career and employment topics are offered in classroom settings and in the Career Center throughout the year. Mock interview days are held twice a year so you can practice interviewing with employers.

The Career Center serves all UNT students in every major discipline at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Enrolled students fund the center's operation through university student fees. Alumni may continue to use center resources for free.

You are encouraged to register with the center the first day you arrive on campus so that you will receive the center's full assistance and may start networking with employers immediately. On-campus interviews are offered each semester by employers in business, industry, government, public service and education. The Eagle Network, a 24-hour Internet service, can provide you and alumni with information on available positions, seminars, career fairs, on-campus interviews, etc. Only students and UNT alumni who have registered in the Eagle Network may view job postings and participate in on-campus interviews.
