Undergraduate Majors and Interests
Many of the challenging and exciting careers in the Air Force do not require a specific academic major. Career fields include administration, aircraft maintenance, intelligence, pilot, navigator, public affairs, space and missiles, security forces and many others. All majors offered by the University of North Texas' Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, and Public Affairs and Community Service can be applied to careers in the Air Force.
Depending on your major, UNT offers two-, three- and four-year Air Force ROTC programs through the Department of Aerospace Studies. Each semester, you will broaden your Air Force and leadership knowledge through aerospace studies courses and a leadership laboratory. All aerospace studies courses provide academic credit.
You may enter the four-year program upon enrolling at UNT in Denton or at the Dallas Campus. Students attending Midwestern State University, SMU, Texas Woman's University, the University of Texas at Dallas, Collin County Community College, North Central Texas College, Paul Quinn College and the University of Dallas are eligible to enroll in Air Force ROTC at UNT.
During your first two years in the program, you will learn about the Air Force's mission and structure and examine military life in the General Military Course (GMC). You will study the development of aircraft from balloons and dirigibles through both world wars to the space vehicles used today.
The GMC will allow you to "try out" Air Force ROTC for up to two years with no obligation to serve in the Air Force unless you are on an Air Force ROTC scholarship.
In the spring of your sophomore year, you may earn an opportunity to attend summer field training at an Air Force base. Selection is based on your scores on the Air Force Officer Qualifying Test and Physical Fitness Test, your grade point average, your medical qualification and your commander ranking.
After you have completed field training, you will be qualified to finish the final two years of the Air Force ROTC program, known as the Professional Officer Course (POC). Entry into the POC requires you to contract with the Air Force.
The POC focuses on leadership, management, officership and national security issues in contemporary American society. As a POC cadet, you will fill key leadership positions within UNT's corps of cadets and take an active role in the development and training of all first- and second-year students. As a student in the POC, you will receive a tax-free allowance each month during the school year.
In addition to taking GMC and POC classes, you will enroll in a leadership laboratory, participating with other members in leadership discussions and exercises. Through the leadership laboratory, you may also take field trips to Air Force installations throughout the nation. You also will have the opportunity to participate in Professional Development Training programs offered during the summer after your freshman and junior years of Air Force ROTC. These are designed to educate you on real-life operations in the Air Force.
While in the Air Force ROTC, you can be involved in several ROTC student groups such as the Arnold Air Society, the Cadet Honor Guard and the Civil Air Patrol. You are encouraged to be involved in any of the more than 300 student organizations and activity groups at UNT.
Once you complete your degree and the Air Force ROTC program, you are commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force.
If you will be entering the Air Force ROTC program as a UNT freshman, you may receive a four-year scholarship. You must apply for a scholarship no later than Dec. 1 of your senior year in high school. Four-year scholarships are based on your SAT or ACT scores, recommendations from high school teachers, extracurricular activities and high school grades, and an interview with an Air Force representative.
You also may receive a scholarship if you're eligible for Air Force ROTC in your freshman, sophomore and junior years at UNT. Scholarships are available for all majors.
The UNT Air Force ROTC also offers the University Leadership Scholarship, valued up to $1,000 per semester. It carries no obligation to the U.S. Air Force, but you must be a full-time student at UNT.
For updated scholarship information, visit www.afrotc.com or call the Unit Admissions Officer for more details.
To enroll, you must be a U.S. citizen attending UNT full time. You must be in good physical condition and have a good, moral character. The Air Force ROTC office is in Kendall Hall, Room 144.
If you are a high school student, we suggest you prepare for college by becoming computer proficient and taking:
You will need to take courses in most of these subjects under the university core curriculum required of all undergraduates, in addition to your major courses. Talk with your high school counselor about preparing for college, including the entrance exams (SAT Reasoning Test or ACT) that you should take during your junior year.
As a benefit for transfer students, UNT participates in the Texas Common Course Numbering System. This system makes it easier to transfer credits for general academic courses from one Texas institution to another.
If you're attending a Texas community college, you should consult the UNT Transfer Guide, the UNT Undergraduate Catalog and an academic counselor to discuss your degree plan. Proper planning will help you receive the maximum amount of transfer credits.
