Non-traditional students are defined by the Association of Non-Traditional Students in Higher Education (ANTSHE) as typically those students over the traditional age, work full or part time or have children or other family obligations. They often are seeking a second degree or are returning to school after a leave or military service. The University of North Texas offers many ways to assist in balancing classes with job and family responsibilities if you are a non-traditional student.
Several offices have extended hours during the long semesters, including Student Financial Aid and Scholarships, Dean of Students, Student Activities, and the Registrar's Offices. An after-hours message line at 940-565-2648 is offered through the Dean of Students Office. All messages are forwarded the next day. Many campus offices also have voice mail or answering machines.
You can choose to enroll your children in a laboratory preschool that is available through the Child Development Laboratory at UNT. However, enrollment is limited. Administered through the College of Education, the preschool enrolls children ages 3 to 5. The program runs throughout the academic year when classes are in session, and spaces are available for up to 55 children. Morning, afternoon or full-day sessions are offered.
For more information about the program, call 940-565-2555 or visit www.coe.unt.edu/cdl.
The Student Activities Center coordinates programs geared toward non-traditional students. The office sponsors National Non-Traditional Student Week events each fall, evening events where non-traditional students can get snacks and information, and family-friendly events such as Family Weekend and Boo Bash. Family weekend is filled with fun activities that appeal to all age groups. Activities include pep rallies, tailgating and breakfast with the president. For more information on Family Weekend, go to www.unt.edu/familyweekend or call 940-565-3807. A monthly newsletter is also e-mailed that features useful information and upcoming events.
During the spring and fall semesters, about 3,800 UNT students, including teaching fellows and graduate assistants, have on-campus jobs. Most students work at least three to four hours in the morning or afternoon, for a total of 15 to 20 hours a week.
The Career Center in Chestnut Hall posts available on-campus and off-campus jobs. The center's Eagle Network is an online system where you can set up an account to view part-time job openings. It is up to you to contact the potential employers for job interviews.
First-time users will need to contact the Career Center in person or by e-mail to obtain a password. The center also offers job fairs each semester that are attended by more than 200 employers who are looking for employees. To contact the Career Center, call 565-2105 or e-mail careercenter@unt.edu.
UNT students, their spouses and their families can take advantage of a group health insurance plan through an independent insurance company. Forms are available at the Student Health and Wellness Center or can be accessed online at www.healthcenter.unt.edu.
You must have a permit to park on campus. Commuter parking permits are good through the end of the academic year. The two types of permits are Premium Commuter and General Commuter. The Premium Commuter Parking Permit allows parking in lots designated "P" as well as "G". The General Commuter Parking Permit is restricted to Fouts Field, The Village Church, the Highland Street/North Texas Boulevard parking area and the Eagle Drive/Welch Street parking area. The premium permit is $180 if purchased in the fall, $120 if purchased in the spring and $60 if purchased for the summer sessions. The general permit is $115 if purchased in the fall, $78 if purchased in the spring and $39 if purchased for the summer sessions. Parking is also available at Discovery Park, formerly known as Research Park. The Discovery Park permit is $36 if purchased in the fall, $26 if purchased in the spring and $13 if purchased for the summer sessions. Permits are available at the UNT Bookstore in the University Union the week before classes start and during the first week of classes, and later at the Sullivant Public Safety Center.
In the fall and spring, the UNT Shuttle regularly stos at the largest commuter lot at Fouts Field to transport students to various locations on campus. The UNT Shuttle operates from 7:15 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday. The shuttle's Night Rider route runs from 5:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Sunday through Thursday. There are also special routes serving Discovery Park. UNT's e-ride system provides on-demand rides from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. all week in a lift-equipped ADA bus. UNT is the first university to provide this service.
Commuters may also access UNT's carpool service at www.alternetrides.com to sign up online for a carpool. The Denton County Transportation Authority features the Commuter Express. This public transportation bus service provides transportation to and from downtown Dallas, Carrollton and Lewisville. The Express is free to UNT students.
UNT police officers are always available to assist in contacting locksmiths or repair services. You may seek assistance by calling the police dispatcher at 940-565-3000 or by lifting the receiver of a campus emergency phone, which connects you automatically with the dispatcher, if there is a safety concern. These yellow phones are located throughout the campus.
The DCTA operates the Access transportation service for people with ADA-certified disabilities. To find out if you may use the service or to ask questions, call 940-243-0077.
As a UNT student, you will receive a membership to the Pohl Recreation Center through your student fees. Paid memberships are also available for purchase for a student's spouse and dependants, and for alumni. A continuing student membership is also offered.
