Bookstore Questions
Does the Bookstore offer textbook reservation service?
Yes, students may reserve textbooks after completing registration. Textbook reservations can be made by stopping by the Bookstore and filling out a reservation form, or if you prefer, order your books online at www.efollett.com or www.unt.bkstr.com. The Bookstore also accepts reservations by mail or fax.
When will reservation forms be filled?
Reservation forms completed this summer will be filled approximately two weeks before fall classes start. Orders are filled based upon the date of application (with the earliest order being filled first). Students may pick up their books until the Sunday before classes begin. All reservations will be cancelled on the first day of classes.
Can we wait until fall to purchase textbooks?
Yes, the Bookstore is open all summer. Most fall textbooks are available by the Sunday when the halls open. For your convenience, the Bookstore has extended hours during move-in weekend. You may also visit the UNT Bookstore’s website to order your books.
Can we charge textbooks and supplies?
Yes, the Bookstore accepts cash, checks, money orders, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express cards. Parents may also purchase gift cards for students’ use at the bookstore. You may also arrange through the university for your student to have an Eagle Express card, whereby your student may use his or her student ID card like a debit card against an account balance that you have established. The UNT Bookstore also carries selected Dell computer models, customized for use on the UNT campus, and available at special academic prices.
What if my son/daughter has to drop a class and sell back books?
The refund period lasts for only one week after the start of school. After that period, textbooks cannot be refunded, but they can still be bought back at the current market value. Textbook buyback occurs every day of the year that the Bookstore is open. The Bookstore offers the current market value of all textbooks to be purchased.
What kinds of software does the bookstore carry?
We have premium access software to support your student’s access to campus computer information and to electronic email. For a price much less than a commercial online service, your student can be in direct communication with your home or office computer, as well as with the internet. He or she can also do homework directly from the residence hall through this service. In addition to this software, we carry many popular computer programs by such companies as Microsoft, Adobe Macromedia, and others. Free software catalogs are available at the Bookstore. Software is also available through the Bookstore’s website.
Can my student get used textbooks?
Used textbooks are in high demand, and therefore sell first. Shop early for the best selection of used books. Textbook reservation forms and online orders both allow you to specify a preference for used books.
Can my student get a refund or resell a used book?
Yes, used textbooks can be refunded or resold under the same guidelines as new textbooks. Again, the refund period lasts for only one week after the start of school, and resale value is always assessed at current market value.
How can a student save money on textbooks?
Shop the “back to school” sales starting in late summer and extending to the third week of fall classes. Drawings for give-aways, including free textbooks, are also offered each semester. The Bookstore’s Bommerang Rewards Program can also help students save money. Students receive points for each dollar spent at the bookstore and for books sold back to the bookstore. Accumulated points are redeemable for $25 bookstore gift card for future purchases, or gift certificates to local retailers.
Computer Support Questions
What kind of computing resources does the university offer students?
Central computing services in support of instruction and research are provided through Academic Computing Services located in Room 119 of the Information Sciences Building. Fourteen General Access computing Labs are available for student use. The labs provide access to a wide range of microcomputer applications on Windows-based and Macintosh personal computers with both draft and laser-quality print facilities. Students living in dorms may connect their personal computers directly to the campus network via the resnet service (see http://resnet.hsl.unt.edu/)
What are the computer and online services for students?
Every student is provided a free E-mail account (see http://eaglemail.unt.edu/), accessible from anywhere on the Internet, as well as web page publishing space. Students activate their account and supply a password for the UNT Internet ID through a web form at http://ams.unt.edu/acctreq.php. A number of courses are offered online via WebCT and are accessible to registered students via their E-mail username and password. In addition, the university provides free computer-based training on a number of technology topics, such as the Microsoft Office suite. Computer services include the UNT Libraries’ online catalog, online indexes, abstracts, and periodicals.
What type of computer should I get for my student to bring to campus?
To access our UNT Internet Services, we recommend the following minimum configuration for Internet connectivity and standard student class work requirements: a Pentium computer with a minimum of 512 MB RAM running Windows 2000 or higher and a 100Mbps Ethernet card for connection to the resnet network or a Macintosh running Mac OS X with 512 MB RAM and a 100Mbps Ethernet card. Students brining laptops are strongly encouraged to also add a wireless card to their machines in order to take advantage of UNT’s wireless network. Microsoft Office products are supported in the computer labs on campus and are good choices for writing papers and developing spreadsheets in class projects.
Is there an E-mail resource number or a place where students can get help with problems?
Students can request help in any of the General Access Labs on campus, come by the Help Desk in Information Sciences Building Room 119, phone us at 940.565.2324, send e-mail to helpdesk@unt.edu, or contact http://www.unt.edu/helpdesk. On the web, a student can look at our Frequently Asked Questions, which lists answers to such questions as how to change an E-mail password (http://ams.unt.edu/) and many other answers helpful to students.
Dining Services Questions
Is my student required to have a meal plan?
All students living on campus are required to purchase a meal plan accept students residing in College Inn, Santa Fe, or Mozart Square and some special exceptions.
How do I get my student exempted from the meal plan?
Students may go to our web site at dining.unt.edu and click on Meal Plans to start the process of requesting an exemption or come to Crumley Hall 132 to pick up a request for exemption form. Please note: you are financially responsible for your meal plan up until the application process has been completed and a decision has been made by the Director of Dining Services. The director's decision to exempt you is based on special circumstances, i.e. work/class conflicts.
Can students choose what kind of meal plan they would like to purchase?
Students may choose from a 7-day or a 5-day meal plan. The price is included in the Housing payment.
What is the difference between the 5 day and 7 day meal plans?

With both plans students may use their ID cards to enter any of our six cafeterias and eat as much as they want as many times a day as they want, from 7:00 a.m. until 12 midnight.
What if my student will miss meals because of a class?
Dining services will prepare a sack lunch or carryout for the student to take with him/her. See the cafeteria manager to sign up for this special option.
What if my student is on a special diet?
Dining Services goes out of its way to meet students needs. Every item served is labeled with nutrition information as well as any common allergens that are present in order to assist students in making educated choices about their diets. A registered dietitian is available on staff to counsel students about special needs. When necessary, the cafeteria will prepare special foods for students.

Employment Questions
What kind of job help can you offer my student?
The Career Center lists a wide variety of on-campus and off-campus jobs through a password-protected site called the Eagle Network (www.ecampusrecruiter.com/unt). Students may access the site by first contacting the Career Center with proof of acceptance to UNT. Upon providing that proof, they will be given a token password. Once the token password is received, the student uses that to create a profile and look at job postings. Contact information for each job is listed at the end of each job posting, telling the student how that employer prefers to receive an application.
Can students apply for jobs during the summer if they will not be enrolled until fall?
Yes, so long as the student had proof of acceptance to the university, he or she is welcome to use the Career Center.
How many hours per week can my student work?
Regular hourly student employees may work no more than 30 hours per week on campus during a regular time of enrollment (Fall and Spring Semesters). International students are limited by visa constraints to 20 hours per week, and College Work-Study students are usually limited to 20 hours per week. During periods between regular enrollments, both regular hourly and international students may work up to 40 hours per week.
What is the likelihood that my student will get a job on campus?
UNT employs between 3,000 and 5,000 students each year, and jobs are listed continuously throughout the fall and spring semesters. While students improve their chances for employment by applying within the month before school starts each fall, students who persist can usually find a job.
Insurance Questions
Who is the student health insurance carrier for UNT?
Group injury and sickness insurance is offered to the students by MEGA Life and Health Insurance. All registered students taking credit hours are eligible to enroll themselves and their dependents in this plan.
When does coverage begin each year?
Coverage can begin just prior to semester of enrollment, and may be purchased for the fall only, spring and summer only, summer only, or annually.
Where can we get more information?
Informational brochures with an enrollment application are available through the Health and Wellness Center, Student Development Suite, University Union Information Desk, and Residence Halls.
Housing Questions
How can we go about securing a room for our student?
It is anticipated that all rooms will be filled and a waiting list will be necessary for fall, so the earlier the request, the better. Applications must be completed online and can be found at www.unt.edu/housing. UNT requires a $75.00 room assurance fee (refundable upon request at the end of association with Housing) and a prepayment of $325 (applied to the first payment) for all students. If all spaces are full, the student will be directed to sign up for the waiting list via the online application. Historically, all students on the waiting list are assigned a space in Housing.
2. What is the cost of housing and can we charge the payments to a credit card? The cost of housing varies with the type of accommodation, but for standard double occupancy space with a seven-day meal plan, figure around $2,800 per semester. Housing payments may be made by check, money order, or Master Card, Visa Discover, and American Express (no cash please). Make payments via the housing website, by mail or in person at the Collections window in Crumley Hall. Will we receive a bill? Payment due dates and amounts are printed on the online contract, are available on the housing website and handed to the students upon move-in.
3. Can I see my son/daughter’s room?
You may visit any hall that is currently open, but you may not be able to see the exact room. The Housing staff provides a guided tour of housing facilities during each orientation session.
4. Should my son/daughter bring a refrigerator or microwave oven?
Students may bring small refrigerators and other electrical appliances that meet safety and power restrictions listed in the ABC’s of Residence Hall Living, available on the housing website (in general, nothing more than 1000 watts and no exposed heating elements).
5. Can we paint the room?
Only the maintenance staff can paint students’ rooms.
6. When can my son/daughter move into the residence hall?
The halls open the Sunday morning (10:00 a.m.), one week before school starts. Food service, however, does not start until Monday at dinner. Consult the calendar in the Schedule of Classes for the exact date students may move into the halls.
7. Can my student switch to another hall if he/she doesn’t like the one assigned?
By the end of the second week of classes, Housing allows students to make adjustments if there is room available. No moves are allowed before this time, since there are usually few, if any, unoccupied rooms into which a student can transfer. Moves to another hall depend on available space. Often a student has to remain in the current hall for an entire semester before an opening is available in a more favored hall. In accordance with the university’s policy on nondiscrimination, moves will not be made based on race, color, national origin, handicap, etc.
8. How do I reach my son/daughter in an emergency?
If your son/daughter is not in his/her room, call the hall’s front desk. If your son/daughter is in class, call the Dean of Students Office. They will locate the class your student should be in and get a message to that class.
9. Do we need to make arrangements for a phone in the room?
Each residence hall room has a telephone jack. Some residence halls have a phone in the room, contact the front desk of a Hall to find out if one is provided. Since the phones are not set up for long distance, many parents prefer their son/daughter to have a calling card.
10. Where can my son/daughter make a long distance call if he/she does not have a calling card?
Pay phones are in the University Union, as well as other buildings. Most students prefer to use personal cell phones for long distance calls.
11. Is there a curfew in the residence halls?
Since 99% of the residents in the halls are legal adults, there is no curfew. There is, however, a restriction on visitation hours.
12. How do I arrange for computer internet access for my student?
All halls are wired for high-speed internet access through our ResNet program. With a speed of 100 Mbs. ResNet is approximately 10 times faster than most corporate systems. The phone line in the room is not tied up when a student is on line. For more information, go to resnet.hsl.unt.edu. There is no charge for activating your account, however, any diagnostic or installation service will be an additional fee at a reasonable cost.
Parking Questions
Please see the parking web page at www.unt.edu/parking for answers to most questions.
If my son/daughter comes to the hall late, will he/she be able to find a parking space near the hall?
Parking spaces are not assigned individually but are available on a first come/first served basis within each lot. Latecomers usually have to use overflow lots. Precaution: Students who need or desire a safety escort from an overflow lot to their residence hall when the shuttle busses are not running may stop at the University Police Department in the Sullivant Public Safety Center, call from their parking location (940.565.3000) or use a blue emergency phone to request this service.
What should my student do if he/she gets a parking citation?
Students should pay citations promptly at the Sullivan Public Safety Center to avoid late fees which are added 10 calendar days after issuance. Excessive unpaid parking citations can cause a students car to be towed and impounded at his/her expense until the citations are settled. Frequent violations of the parking policy can result in the loss of parking privileges.

Students enrolled in the eRefund program will have their refunds sent directly to their checking or savings account before the first class day.
Students are encouraged to enroll in the eRefund program. Forms are available in Student Accounting, at the UNT Dallas Campus, and online at essc.unt.edu/saucs.
How can I receive information about my student’s account?
Student records are protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974. A parental affidavit must be on file with our office each tax year for a parent to receive student account information over the phone or in person. The form may be downloaded from our website and mailed or faxed to our office.
When are bills mailed?
All bills are available online at essc.unt.edu/saucs. The university does not mail bills for registration payment deadlines. Students should pay close attention to payment deadlines. Bills are mailed for the second and third installments for students who choose the payment plan.
