Pedestrian & Vehicle Safety
With enrollment at the University of North Texas on the increase, the amount of vehicular and pedestrian traffic is also on the rise. This increase in both forms of traffic has created a greater need to emphasize safety among our community.
Pedestrians please use a crosswalk whenever available, look both ways before crossing, pay attention to un-attentive drivers, and always give yourself enough time to get to your next class without having to rush.
Vehicles please remember that we have a 20 mph zone at our university and the speed limit in our parking lots is 10 mph. Pedestrians do have the right of way at crosswalks, so please focus your attention to pedestrian traffic while driving through our university. For your personal safety, and to obey Texas Traffic Law, please wear your safety belt before operating your vehicle.
Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Event
This program was a two day event that promoted awareness for pedestrian and bicycle safety. Several hundred students, faculty, and staff were served hotdogs, given promotional items and educated on pedestrian and bicycle safety. Our sponsors for the event included UNT PD, Housing, Health Center , Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities, Off-Campus Services and Community Development, and Wells Fargo. A special thank you goes out to all of our volunteers, who made this event a big success. Please take a moment and view the photos that were taken at the event.
Pedestrian Safety Information
From "Mean Streets", a report by the Surface Transportation Policy Project:
- 6,000 pedestrians are killed every year.
- 110,000 pedestrians are injured every year.
- An increase in speed from 20 mph to 30 mph, increases the risk of death for a pedestrian.
- If a car going 20 miles per hour hits a person, there is a 95 percent chance that the person will survive.
- If a car is going 30 miles per hour, the person has a slightly better that a 50/50 chance of survival.
Protect yourself by doing these things:
Walk on the Sidewalk
- Stay on the sidewalk and crosswalks. Avoid walking in traffic where there are no sidewalks or crosswalks.
- If you have to walk on a road that does not have sidewalks, walk facing traffic.
Cross at Intersections
- Most people are hit by cars when they cross the road at places other than intersections.
- Even though pedestrians have the right of way at crosswalks, make sure and look for the un-attentive motorist before crossing.
Look left, right, and left for traffic
- Stop at the curb and look left, right, and left again for traffic. Stopping at the curb signals drivers that you intend to cross.
- Cross in marked crosswalks and obey the signal.
Be Green…….Be Seen
- Drivers need to see you to avoid you.
- Stay out of the driver's blind spot.
- Make eye contact with drivers when crossing busy streets.
- Wear bright colors or reflective clothing if you are walking near traffic at night.
- Carry a flashlight when walking in the dark.
