SUBJECT: GOOD NEIGHBOR SCHOLARSHIP EXEMPTION
APPLICABILITY: STUDENTS
Policy:
Qualified native-born students from the other nations of the American
hemisphere and from Latin American countries designated by the United
States Department of State, excluding Cuba, may be exempt from the payment
of certain tuition and fees, including graduate-level tuition, as provided
in section 54.207 of the Texas Education Code and rules adopted by the
Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for one academic year.
Eligibility Requirements:
Every applicant who wishes to receive the “Students from Other Nations
of the American Hemisphere” or “Good Neighbor Scholarship”
exemption shall furnish satisfactory evidence, certified by the proper
authority of his native country, that he is a bona fide native-born citizen
and resident of the country which certifies his application and that he
is scholastically qualified for admission. No student shall be exempted
under this policy who is not a native-born citizen of the country certifying
his qualifications and who has not lived in one of the nations of this
hemisphere for a period of at least five years.
Selection Process: The Good Neighbor Scholarship
Committee, coordinated by the Student Financial Aid and Scholarships (SFAS)
department, reviews applications for the exemption and recommends students
to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (the “Board”).
The Board selects the recipients and notifies the SFAS, which shall notify
the student recipient(s).
Student Requirements: To receive an updated
bill, the student must contact Student Accounting and University Cashiering
Services.
