The Regents' Faculty Lecturer will be a person whose strong scholarly or artistic achievements have brought credit to the University of North Texas and to the honoree's discipline. The lecturer's thesis will relate to both the university and the broader community. The lecture and the ceremony which surrounds it are intended as a celebration of human striving and intellectual achievement. Formal invitations for nomination as the Regents' Faculty Lecturer will be extended to the faculty on or before September 15 of each academic year. The Faculty Research Committee will process the nominations. UNT faculty are invited to nominate any of their peers as a potential Regents' Faculty Lecturer. Nominations require the name of the nominated individual and the signature of the person making the nomination. Nominations should be received by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer on or before the designated deadline. Nominated individuals will remain on the list for three years. All nominated individuals will be asked to submit a current vita for consideration by the Faculty Research Committee. Based on the vitae, the Faculty Research Committee will select five outstanding faculty members for further consideration. These individuals will be invited to submit a proposal for a public lecture to be delivered in the fall semester of the following year. The Faculty Research Committee will select three meritorious proposals from the five finalists and forward them to the Chancellor and President of the University, who will present them to the Board of Regents. The Board of Regents will announce its selection of the honoree before the end of the fall semester. The Regents' choice as Faculty Lecturer will begin preparation for the lecture during the spring semester. The individual designated as Regents' Faculty Lecturer will receive an award of $3000 to further the honorees' scholarly or artistic activities. The recipient will be released from one class in the spring semester preceeding the fall lecture to facilitate preparation of the lecture, if the honoree's department can absorb the class release. If needed, the recipient may also receive a Faculty Research Grant award of up to $500 for preparation of slides, transparencies, or other audio-visual materials for use during the lecture. The lecture shall be delivered on or about November 1 to a special convocation of faculty, staff, students, and community members. |
