SUBJECT:  PROCEDURES FOR THE RENEWAL OF PROBATIONARY APPOINTMENTS                       AND THE GRANTING OF TENURE

APPLICABILITY: FACULTY AND ACADEMIC 

1. Departmental recommendations will conform strictly to published departmental guidelines, a current copy of which will be on file in the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.

2. Departmental recommendations will conform in all respects to the principles and guidelines set forth in the Faculty Handbook.

3. Departmental recommendations will be accompanied by the following minimum documentation:

a. Recommendation of the Promotion and Tenure Committee.

b. Recommendation of the departmental chair.

c. Evidence of student evaluation of the faculty member’s teaching.

d. Evidence of annual evaluation by the faculty member’s peers in all rating areas including teaching effectiveness, research/scholarly creativity, service, and professional integrity, ethics, and understanding of the nature of membership in the community of scholars.

e. Evidence in writing that the faculty member has been advised and counseled annually by the chair and/or the Promotion and Tenure Committee.

f. Copies of letters from the chair and/or the Promotion and Tenure Committee notifying the faculty member as to the departmental recommendation.

4. Departmental recommendations will be submitted to the office of the appropriate dean and thence with the dean’s recommendation to the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs in strict accord with the dates established in the current administrative calendar and in accord with the schedule set forth in 2.43000. Deans and/or the academic vice president may organize an advisory committee to assist in the review process.

5. Notification of intention not to reappoint will be in accordance with the following schedule:

a. Not later than March 1 of the first academic year of probationary service if the appointment expires at the end of that year; or, if a one-year appointment terminates during an academic year, at least three months prior to its termination.

b. Not later than December 15 of the second academic year of probationary service.

c. Not less than 12 months before termination of employment after two or more years of probationary service.

6. Adverse recommendations from the department for tenure or renewal must show written evidence that the faculty member has received copies of the recommendations of the chair and the Promotion and Tenure Committee and has been informed of departmental appeals procedures. Summary reports of such hearings will be included, as well as a copy of current departmental appeals procedures.

7. Adverse recommendations from the office of the dean for tenure or renewal must show written evidence that the faculty member has received a copy of the recommendation of the dean and has been informed of the school or college appeals procedures. Summary reports of such hearings will be included, as well as a copy of current school or college appeals procedures.
