SUBJECT: APPOINTMENT OF DISTINGUISHED PROFESSORS

APPLICABILITY: FACULTY

An individual whose long, continuing superior scholarly or creative achievement has resulted in a national or international reputation may be appointed as Distinguished Professor. Such achievement will usually be marked by an accumulation of awards or prizes given by national or international organizations in the individual's field.

Recommendations for appointment at (or promotion to) the rank of Distinguished Professor follow the normal personnel procedure within the University — beginning with departmental or search personnel committees, as appropriate, and moving through chairperson, dean of the school or college, provost and vice president for academic affairs and president, to the Board of Regents.

The selection process for a distinguished professor shall include also the submission of the recommendation to a panel of three outside evaluators, who shall be leading scholars in the field based at institutions known for academic excellence. This panel shall be selected by the provost and vice president for academic affairs with the assistance of the appropriate dean, chairperson, and departmental personnel committee, each of whom shall be responsible for suggesting three evaluators. The provost and vice president for academic affairs shall select one person from each group of three and shall be responsible for requesting and receiving these outside evaluations.
