SUBJECT:  HUMAN SUBJECTS RESEARCH POLICY           

APPLICABILITY:  TOTAL UNIVERSITY                

 

 

     Human subjects research is defined as a systematic investigation, including research development, testing and evaluation, designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge.  Activities that meet this definition constitute research for the purposes of this Policy, whether or not they are conducted or supported under a program which is considered research for other purposes.  For example, some demonstration and service programs may include research activities.

 

     Research programs at the University of North Texas that encompass any form of human subjects research must adhere to all Federal regulations governing the use of human subjects.  UNT’s “Multiple Project Assurance of Compliance with DHHS Regulations for Protection 

of Human Research Subjects” specifies the university’s responsibilities for protecting  human subjects in research. This  Policy applies to all forms of human subjects research, whether funded or not.

 

     All University students, faculty, and staff members  who plan to use human subjects in  research shall submit a completed "Application for Approval of Investigation Involving the

 Use of Human Subjects" to the UNT Institutional Review Board (IRB) for formal review 

and approval.  The “Investigator’s Guide to Use of Human Subjects in Research” outlines 

the federal regulations governing human subjects research as administered by the UNT Institutional Review Board.   All relevant institutional documents and federal regulations associated with this Policy are available at the Office of Research Services website.
