Happy Holidays,

As 2008 comes to a close, I wish you a joyous holiday season. This year brought change for our nation, and I want to thank each of you for your unwavering support of UNT during a time when we also are changing and growing stronger.

We have made incredible advances, deepening our commitment to protect the environment and gaining momentum as a public research institution.

This fall, nearly 35,000 students are building their future with UNT. Although this marks an eighth consecutive year of record-high enrollment proving that we remain the university of choice for many students our goal is to be the best, not simply to be big.

This year, we jump-started a collaborative research cluster initiative with a $25 million investment to capitalize on the innovative work of our outstanding faculty. We also received a multimillion dollar government contract to create the Institute for Science and Engineering Simulation to help the nation address pressing military issues. And we have added and will continue to add renowned researchers to our ranks to further our impact.

UNT has long been an environmentally conscious institution, and we became the first major public university in Texas to adhere to even higher environmental standards by signing the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment earlier this year. We continue to lead the way as a green university, embracing a low-impact building philosophy with our pledge that all of our major building projects will be LEED-certified. We broke ground on our Life Sciences Complex, which will become our first LEED-certified building and will soon be followed by our second one, the Business Leadership Building. And in the spirit of being green, we electronically sent our holiday letter to you to minimize our paper use.

Our students paved the way for us to build a new stadium that will be the crowning feature of a new sports and entertainment complex. They recognize that the complex will highlight our excellence as an institution, and their endorsement is a launching point for us to garner support from our alumni and friends to make our vision a reality.

And our Emerald Eagle Scholars program, now in its second year, has given more than 700 deserving students the chance to pursue higher education. This fall, we expanded our reach by partnering with Education is Freedom, an organization dedicated to helping students go to college. Together we are creating a pathway for Dallas-area students to attend UNT as scholars. I hope you'll join us February 28 for the Emerald Ball. We will be at the Fort Worth Zoo to celebrate the "wild" success of UNT!

With the progress we made this year, 2009 promises to be an exciting chapter for us.

With green pride,
Gretchen M. Bataille
