Diverse magazine recognizes UNT for number of degrees awarded to African Americans

From InHouse, UNT's faculty and staff news source

UNT recently was recognized by Diverse Issues in Higher Education as a Top 100 Degree Producer in 2006.

The list tracks the number of degrees awarded to African Americans by traditionally white institutions in the United States.

Only five Texas universities made the list, and only the University of Houston-University Park, which was ranked at 31, awarded more degrees to undergraduate African American students than UNT. Other Texas institutions in the top 100 are UH-Downtown at 70, University of Texas at Arlington at 79 and Wayland Baptist at 95.

In 2004-05, the academic year the 2006 list is based on, 443 African American students earned UNT bachelor's degrees, which was about 10 percent of the 4,360 undergraduate students who graduated that year.

This year, 3,989 African American students are enrolled. During the 2004-05 year, UNT enrolled 3,336 African American students and in 2005-06, there were 3,667 African American students enrolled.
