University of North Texas to host fourth annual Emerald Ball, Feb. 27

From a UNT News Service press release

Hundreds will descend on the Gaylord Texan next month to celebrate and support UNT’s Emerald Eagle Scholars at the Emerald “Super” Ball.

This year’s Emerald Ball, an annual gala event that raises funds for the Emerald Eagle Scholars program, will begin at 6 p.m. at the Gaylord Texan. Reservations are $200 and can be made at https://development.unt.edu/givenow/buy_eb_2010.php or by contacting Karen Selby at 940-565-3480 or karen.selby@unt.edu by Feb. 16 (Tuesday).

Attendees will enjoy cocktails, a silent auction, dinner, a live band and dancing. They also will enjoy a performance from Jefferey Ou, an Emerald Eagle Scholar and talented pianist, who competed on the FOX show "America’s Got Talent" last year.

Varying levels of sponsorship are also available. For more information on sponsorships, visit www.unt.edu/emeraldball/sponsorships.html or contact Pat King at 940-565-3687 or patricia.king@unt.edu. For the first time this year, individuals also will be able to sponsor an Emerald Eagle Scholar’s attendance, so that he or she can enjoy the Emerald Ball festivities.

The Emerald Eagle Scholars program has celebrated several successes in recent months. In December, Ivonne Pereira became the program’s first graduate, a little more than two years after entering UNT as part of the first class of scholars. The program also earned the highly competitive Texas Higher Education Star Award this year, which recognizes achievements in closing gaps in education. UNT has received a Star Award for three consecutive years.

UNT President Gretchen M. Bataille launched the program during her inauguration to give academically talented students with high financial need the chance to attend college. Since its inception in 2007, the program has helped nearly 1,200 students realize their dreams of attending college. By fall 2010, an estimated 1,600 students will be in the program, thanks to the gracious support of donors.
