Communication design students reap awards

Students in the communication design program in UNT's College of Visual Arts and Design have earned $13,500 in scholarships and awards at several recent competitions -- the Dallas Society of Visual Communications' National Student Show, the Fort Worth Addys, the Dallas Addys and the Creative Summit awards.

"These awards speak volumes about the quality of our students and their work," says Eric Ligon, associate professor of communication design, who earned a Golden Apple award for outstanding teaching in the DSVC National Student Show. "We send our congratulations to these students and the professors who guided them."

Dallas Society of Visual Communications awards

UNT students took home 15 of the 31 awards given at the Dallas Society of Visual Communications 7th Annual National Student Show, earning $7,875 in awards and scholarships. The students were:

Best of Category Awards

  • Best of Logos: Anna Neiss ($125)
  • Best of Letterhead Package: Brendon Avalos ($125)
  • Best of Posters: Seungkyung Na ($125)
  • Best Magazine Covers/Spreads: Natalia Zinser ($125)
  • Best of Brochures & Catalogs: Jayme Davis ($125)
  • Best of Annual Reports: Josh Kitchens ($125)
  • Best Pro Bono Advertising: David Heflin ($125)
  • Best Interactive Design: Jennifer Jennings ($125)
  • Best of Illustration: Natalia Padillia ($125)

Judges' Choice Awards

  • Judge Yvette Wheeler of RBMM: Seungkyung Na for "Paper Back Writer" ($250)

Sponsored Awards

  • Emily Schwarting, 1,400 Words Scholarship, Best Use of Copy ($500)
  • Paul Samples for "Herman Miller AR" Clampitt Paper Scholarship, Best Use of Paper ($1,000)

Scholarships/Portfolio Awards

  • Anna Neiss, DSVC Jump-Start Scholarship ($2,000)
  • Ashley Ayer, Dick Sloane Portfolio Prize ($3,000)

UNT students took home 21 of the 29 medals presented at the 2011 Fort Worth Addys, sponsored by the Fort Worth Ad League. The students were:

Creative Summit

UNT students brought home $5,625 in awards (including $25 prizes for pieces selected for the show) at the Creative Summit competition, a highly respected student competition and conference that is attended by students and professionals from across the country.

The following students earned awards:

  • Ryan Smith--Singing Cow Award ($1,000)
  • Scott Spooner--Ralph Award ($500)
  • Paul Samples--Ralph Award ($500)
  • Maxim Barkhatov--Creative Passion Award ($1,500) and Ralph Award ($500)
  • Ashley Ayer--$5 bill that's been illustrated on and signed by Gary Baseman
