North Texas Insider Alumni newsletter

Dr. Norval Pohl Dear Alum,

Two things happened this month to illustrate UNT's dedication to strong academics and research, as well as our commitment to providing a complete college experience. I'm proud to tell you about both.

We recently signed our first technology licensing agreement. A new start-up company, NanoStar Inc., intends to commercialize some of the intellectual property developed in our physics lab. The new company will focus on energy-related applications for carbon nanotubes using patent-pending discoveries owned by UNT.

If the commercialization feasibility study looks promising, NanoStar Inc. will house some or all of its advanced research at our new Research Park campus. NanoStar is only the first of several businesses we expect to take advantage of the expertise of our faculty and students. Over time, Research Park will attract several businesses providing opportunities for our students, faculty and graduates. It will become an engine of economic development for Denton and the North Texas region.

In addition, UNT seeks to create a vibrant athletic experience for our students, alumni and fans. With their victory over Arkansas State, the Mean Green football team won its 25th consecutive Sun Belt game and completed their fourth consecutive season as Sun Belt Conference champions. We also recently won our first ever Women's Soccer Championship and earned our first berth in the NCAA women's soccer tournament.

The football team's win means we will be making our fourth consecutive appearance in the New Orleans Bowl Dec. 14.  Pack your bags for the Big Easy and join your UNT family for the Bowl Party!

Happy Thanksgiving,
Norval

New Orleans Bowl bound
Meet me in New Orleans to cheer on the Mean Green as we tailgate and celebrate before the team competes in the Wyndham New Orleans Bowl. The game starts at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 14 in the Louisiana Superdome. If you can't be there in person, plan to party at home and watch on ESPN. Jazz legend
At UNT, we're used to rubbing elbows with the giants of jazz, but if you come to campus Nov. 23 to see the One O'Clock Lab Band's annual fall concert, you'll also see a movie star. Benny Golson, who was given a "starring role" in Steven Spielberg's hit movie The Terminal with Tom Hanks, will perform with the band. To learn more, click this link.

Global image
Studying at UNT doesn't always mean just learning in Denton. For hundreds of our students each year, the world becomes the classroom. This year, the Study Abroad Center presented a gallery exhibition of photographs taken by UNT students while studying in foreign countries. Check them out and see the world through their eyes by clicking below and following the "winners" and "others" links on the page.

Milestone members
During our annual appreciation dinner Saturday, it was my honor to recognize Bill and Missy Tyler as the One Thousandth members of the President's Council. Members of the President's Council support our most important needs. In return, they enjoy a variety of benefits including invitations to special events and gatherings, unique quarterly updates, and the opportunity to name a scholarship fund, among other things. Smooth voting
When Americans turned out at the polls in record numbers on Election Day this year, many voters in North Texas were met by poll workers recruited from UNT. With the help of an $80,000 grant, the second largest award given by the Election Assistance Commission and the largest to a college or university, UNT recruited about 1,500 poll workers, engaging them in the election process. Calling recent graduates
With another commencement right around the corner, I want to remind you that membership in the North Texas Exes is more affordable than ever before for our recent graduates. To join upon graduation, new alumni simply need to choose to donate the property damage deposit they paid the first semester they enrolled at UNT to the Exes. Since we recognize those first years after college can be tough, membership dues for the second and third year after graduation cost $20. In the fourth year, dues become the standard, annual rate of $40. For more information about joining the Exes, visit
www.unt.edu/alumni.
