DENTON (UNT), Texas - To commemorate The North Texas Daily turning 90 this year,
the UNT Department of Journalism threw a birthday bash at its Homecoming tent in Mean Green Village.
The Daily began as the Campus Chat, which was first published in the 1916-17 school year.
The Chat changed to a four-day publication in 1970 and became The North Texas Daily.
The Campus Chat, which printed on Wednesdays, was a supplement to the yearbook to give expression to the
worthwhile events of the campus community. It offered an annual subscription at a rate of $1.25.
The early editions document campus and world events, including former students killed in the First World War
and warnings of the Spanish flu.
Today's paper is available at no charge to our students, faculty and staff.
Many former Daily editors now work for other news organizations, such as The Dallas Morning News,
Time magazine, the Chicago Tribune and the Los Angeles Times.
