Legendary Dallas Cowboy and entrepreneur Roger Staubach will be the keynote speaker at the 2009 The BDO Seidman, LLP Leadership Luncheon hosted by UNT's Murphy Center for Entrepreneurship on Nov. 13.
"While most people know Roger Staubach for his accomplishments on the gridiron, we recognize him as one of our nation's most successful entrepreneurs. It's an honor to have him as this year's keynote speaker," says Tony Mendes, director of the Murphy Center for Entrepreneurship.
In addition to Staubach's address, Mark Speese, CEO and Chairman of Rent-A-Center, Inc. will be awarded the Murphy Award, which is given to an individual who has demonstrated a lifetime commitment to entrepreneurship.
Speese, a resident of Plano, started his own rent-to-own business in 1986. The business grew through a series of acquisitions during the 90s. Today, Speese oversees 18,500 co-workers and 3,000 stores in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Speese is president of the board of directors for the Collin County Children's Advocacy Center in Plano and an active board member of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) and the Dallas Regional Chamber of Commerce. He also is a member of the Dallas Citizen's Council.
Staubach joined the Dallas Cowboys in 1969 after serving four years active duty with the United States Navy. Staubach earned the Heisman Trophy in 1963, as a junior at the Naval Academy. He spent his entire NFL career with the Cowboys and was starting quarterback for eight out of his 11 years, leading the team to four Super Bowls and achieving victories in Super Bowls VI and XII.
In 1977, Staubach entered the commercial real estate industry, forming The Staubach Company. Over the years the firm became a leading global real estate advisory firm that delivered cost-effective solutions for the users of office, industrial and retail spaces. In July 2008, The Staubach Company merged with Jones LaSalle. Staubach serves as the executive chairman.
Winners of the New Venture Creation Contest, a contest that provides seed money to students to fund their entrepreneurial business plans, also will be announced.
