Richard Fossey, a professor in the Department of Teacher Education and Administration, has been selected to serve as the first Dr. Mike Moses Chair in Educational Administration. His five-year term began this fall.
Donald A. Buchholz, an alumnus and member of the UNT Board of Regents, funded the endowed chair position. Buchholz also is the founder of Southwest Securities Inc., which established a scholarship endowment last year to benefit students in UNT's superintendent certification program.
The chair position is designed to reward an exceptional faculty member for his or her scholarship. In addition, the funding provides resources to build UNT's educational administration programs and bring increased recognition to the graduate programs in this area.
The chair position is named for Dr. Mike Moses, who has served as a Texas educator for more than 30 years. Moses was the Commissioner of Education for the state of Texas from 1995 through 1999, deputy chancellor for Systems Operations at Texas Tech University System from 1999 to 2001 and general superintendent of the Dallas Independent School District from 2001 until 2004. Currently he serves as the senior educational advisor for Raise Your Hand Texas and the Center for Reform of School Systems.
"Our state needs top quality school administrators, and I wanted to help UNT develop an educational administration program that was second to none," Buchholz says. "I also wanted to honor Mike Moses' successful career by attaching his name to this top-notch program."
Fossey has been a professor in the Department of Teacher Education and Administration since 2006. He also is a senior policy researcher in UNT's Center for the Study of Education Reform. He has a law degree from the University of Texas and a doctorate in education policy from Harvard University. Fossey teaches courses in school law and higher education law, and has written more than 200 articles, book chapters and published essays on education law and policy.
