Welcome to UNT

The University of North Texas, the flagship university of the UNT System, is a student-centered public research university dedicated to discovering the power of ideas.

The faculty and staff at UNT value helping our students succeed – at whatever endeavors they seek to pursue.

This fall, we are teaching more than 33,500 students, a record enrollment that reflects the face of our globe and nation, as we have students from 132 countries and almost every state, as well as every county of Texas, are enrolled here.

Our students learn from a faculty committed to teaching and research.

UNT faculty members participate in a stunning array of innovative research and creative activities, much of which is unique and will make a difference in the world we live in. And many of our scholars and programs are recognized as national leaders.

We house the world’s leading graduate program in environmental ethics, as well as the Military History Seminar that is recognized nationally as the pre-eminent gathering of top scholars in the field.

UNT also is the only public university in the nation that has a collection of three high-powered microscopes, which give our nanotechnology research and College of Engineering a competitive edge.

Next fall, UNT’s College of Engineering will begin offering the nation’s first degrees in mechanical and energy engineering. The groundbreaking programs will focus students on the production of energy, which is a critical need as our nation seeks alternatives to fossil fuel.

Being the first – and often the best – is not new for UNT. It is, in fact, our very heritage.

We are home to the nation’s first jazz studies program, and nearly 60 years after we started it, we remain the best at teaching it. Our College of Music is world-renowned for more than its contributions to jazz, and we continue to excel in the visual and performing arts as well.

In fact, we have nationally recognized programs in the many disciplines taught within our 11 schools and colleges, and our alumni have excelled at everything from launching successful entrepreneurial endeavors to scientific research and medicine.

As the 14th president of this outstanding university, I intend to work to strengthen the institutional image and reputation of UNT, which will only enhance the power of a UNT degree.

With green pride,
Gretchen M. Bataille
