Lee JacksonI'm proud to share with you this issue of Resource magazine. It illustrates our view that research strengthens teaching and learning. Research is the thread that weaves teaching, discovery, innovation and public service into the richly woven fabric of higher education.

Multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research is aimed at the discovery of new knowledge, the synthesis and assimilation of that knowledge, and the innovation necessary to put it to work. Research at University of North Texas System institutions directly supports the education received by our students and ensures that it is increasingly relevant to the needs of industry, commerce, the public sector and professions.

Our students, both undergraduate and graduate, are working alongside faculty participating in research projects. They share in the excitement of discovery and the opportunity to publish in peer-reviewed journals. These students are the next generation of knowledge seekers, who will contribute to great discoveries, lead organizations and continue to improve research and teaching methodologies.

External funding for UNT’s research endeavors and the preparation of our graduates to compete in a diverse, global and technology-rich society are critical factors in elevating the Dallas-Fort Worth region to a higher level nationally.

As you read through Resource, I hope its articles, news briefs and profiles will lead you to a new appreciation of UNT’s diverse and high-quality academic scholarship, which will always be at the core of our research mission and our standing as a university system.
