Non-Traditional Student Services

Newsletters

Nontraditional students are defined by the Association of Non-Traditional Students in Higher Education (ANTSHE) as typically those students over the traditional age, work full or part time or have children or other family obligations. They often are seeking a second degree or are returning to school after a leave or military service. The university offers many ways to assist in balancing classes with job and family responsibilities if you are a nontraditional student.

After-hours Services

Several offices have extended hours during the long semesters, including Student Financial Aid and Scholarships, Dean of Students, Student Activities, and the Registrar's Offices. An after-hours message line at 940-565-2648 is offered through the Dean of Students Office. All messages are forwarded the next day. Many campus offices also have voice mail or answering machines.

Preschool Options

You can choose to enroll your children in a laboratory preschool that is available through the Child Development Laboratory at UNT. However, enrollment is limited. Administered through the College of Education, the preschool enrolls children ages 3 to 5. The program runs throughout the academic year when classes are in session, and spaces are available for up to 55 children. Mornings, afternoons or full-day sessions are offered.

For more information about the program, call 940-565-2555 or visit www.coe.unt.edu/cdl.

Employment

During the spring and fall semesters, about 3,800 UNT students, including teaching fellows and graduate assistants, have on-campus jobs. Most students work at least three to four hours in the morning or afternoon, for a total of 15 to 20 hours a week.

The Career Center in Chestnut Hall posts available on-campus and off-campus jobs. The center has an online system where you can set up an account to view part-time openings. It is up to you to contact the potential employers for job interviews. First-time users will need to contact the Career Center in person or by e-mail to obtain a password. The center also offers job fairs each semester that are attended by more than 200 employers who are looking for employees. To contact the Career Center, call 940-565-2105 or email at careercenter@unt.edu.

Health Insurance

UNT students, their spouses and their families can take advantage of a group health insurance plan through an independent insurance company. The forms can be picked up at the Health Center or online.

Metro Phone Lines

Telephones with metro lines are available for toll-free long-distance phone calls from campus to any location in the Dallas-Fort Worth region. Located outside the University Program Council Office on the second floor of the University Union, the phones are available during the fall and spring semesters 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Toll free long-distance phone calls from any location in the Dallas-Fort Worth region area to UNT can be made by dialing the university's metro line at 817-267-3731.

Motorist Services

You must have a permit to park on campus. Commuter parking permits are good through the end of the academic year. The two types of permits are Premium and General Commuter. The Premium Commuter Parking Permit allows parking in any lots designated "P" as well as "G". The General Commuter Parking Permit is restricted to Fouts Field, Grace Temple Baptist Church the Highland/North Texas Boulevard parking area and the Eagle Drive/Welch Street parking area. The premium permit is $140 if purchased in the fall, $94 if purchased in the spring and $46 if purchased for the summer sessions. The general permit is $100 if purchased in the fall, $67 if purchased in the spring and $34 if purchased for summer sessions. Permits are available at the UNT Bookstore in the University Union the week before classes start and during the first week of classes, and at the Sullivant Public Safety Center.

UNT police officers are always available to assist in contacting locksmiths or repair services. You may seek assistance by calling the police dispatcher at 940-565-3000 or by lifting the receiver of a campus emergency phone, which connects you automatically with the dispatcher, if there is a safety concern. These yellow phones are located throughout the campus.

The DCTA operates the Access transportation service for people with ADA-certified disabilities. To find out if you may use the service or to ask questions, call 940-243-0077.
