10. How do I order my regalia (cap, gown and hood)?  What are the colors on the hood?

Graduating students order their regalia, commencement announcements, class rings, and other UNT memorabilia through the University Bookstore at  (940)565-2592. Click here for the regalia order form. Graduation is a formal ceremonial event. Students are expected to order and wear regalia consistent with the standards of the University of North Texas. The best way to ensure this is to order your regalia from the UNT University Bookstore Merchandise Department. The regalia ordering form requires information such as your name, your school, and your degree, etc. Check "Master of Science" on your order form for a gold hood.

The regalia (cap, gown, and hood) style and colors are chosen by both the University and the School of Library and Information Sciences. Students are not allowed to "custom" select colors for their regalia.  In 1999, the School of Library and Information Science along with other schools, departments, and colleges, selected their hood style and color. The hood is basic black, with the green and white silk to represent the University of North Texas and the gold velvet to represent sciences at the Master's level. This is the SLIS tradition. Other universities use lemon yellow or canary yellow for the velvet for Library Sciences, but that is not the tradition of UNT SLIS.

When your order arrives, open it to make sure that it is complete (cap, gown, tassel, and hood). It may need to be pressed before wearing it on commencement day.

11. What do I do if I have problems, concerns, or questions about graduation regalia?

You must deal directly with the UNT Bookstore for all orders and any problems related to your regalia. SLIS and the Capstone Committee cannot assist in solving problems about regalia. Candidates should deal directly with the UNT Bookstore Merchandise Department. For enquiries, call the Merchandise Manager directly at 940-565-4816. It is recommended that customers speak to the Bookstore personnel to ensure their order is received, questions are answered, and any other problem is handled.

12. What will happen prior to the ceremony and how do I know where to line up and how do I proceed to the stage?

You will receive a University of North Texas graduation letter prior to the date which provides instructions and a name card that you bring with you to the ceremony. There will be signs directing to the graduation assembly areas located on the ground floor of the Coliseum or where to gather at the Murchison as well as instructions in the letter. You are to wear your cap, gown, tassel and hood.

Staff will check you in and review the pronouncement of your name as it is written on the card.  When lining up, you will be assisted in getting your hood in the right position. The SLIS candidates will enter together, led by class marshals. When it is your turn to graduate, you will rise, line up and proceed on stage when your name is called; you shake hands with the University President and SLIS Dean, and receive your diploma cover and  master’s candidates will receive a lapel pin from the graduate school dean.. A photo of each student is taken as you leave the platform. You will then return to your original seat. If you need special assistance because of a disability, please notify SLIS in advance by calling 877-275-7547 so that proper arrangements can be made to assist you. The West side of the Coliseum and Murchison is designated for the hearing impaired.
