The Lady Kate Medders Scholarship Fund

Lady Kate Medders, who was previously a teacher in the English Department and a member of the library staff, became the first full-time instructor in the library service courses at North Texas State Teachers College in 1935. The program progressed under the guidance of Mrs. Medders and the Department of Library Service was established in 1939. Due to its growth in enrollment and reputation, the Department soon emerged as the principle supplier of librarians throughout the state. Mrs. Medders, considered to be the School's founder, was an inspiration to the Department's students and faculty and continued as their guiding spirit until her retirement in 1953. Membership funds from the SLIS Alumni Society continue to be a source of funding for this scholarship. She died April 7, 1975.
