Information Technology Knowledge and Skills
Entry-Level Requirements

The School of Library and Information Sciences (SLIS) prepares students for careers in the technology–intensive information professions.  An important aspect of this preparation involves the development of advanced information technology knowledge and skills.  This development occurs through courses and projects.

To be successful in coursework, entering students should have a mastery of basic information technology knowledge and skills.  Advanced skills and knowledge build upon a solid foundation of the basics. To assist students in assessing their computer competency, SLIS is introducing a new policy related to Entry Level Information Technology Knowledge and Skills (ITKS).  This policy is effective for all SLIS students enrolling in courses in Spring 2002.  With a solid foundation of the basics, entering students will optimize their learning experience in all SLIS classes.

The new ITKS policy has three components:

Students should acquire Entry Level Information Technology Knowledge and Skills before the first semester of enrollment by any of several means:

1) successful completion of SLIS 5710 before starting other SLIS coursework
2) other appropriate coursework and training
3) on-the-job experience
4) self-study.
