UNT/IMLS Scholarship Application


The University of North Texas School of Library and Information Sciences and the Nevada State Library and Archives are offering forty scholarships and related support for students admitted to the UNT Nevada Cohort Program for the Fall 2007. The School of Library and Information Sciences will begin the fourth Nevada Program Cohort in September, 2007. Onsite instruction will be held during two four-day institutes (August 31 through September 3, 2007 and January 11-14, 2008) held at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas with the remainder of course instruction delivered online.

The UNT/IMLS Scholars Program is funded through a grant to the Nevada State Library and Archives and the University of North Texas School of Library and Information Sciences from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to support the recruitment and education of a new generation of librarians.

DESCRIPTION OF THE UNT/IMLS SCHOLARS PROGRAM

The UNT/IMLS Scholarship program offers recipients:

  • $10,000 scholarship awards. Paid in two annual increments (divided between the Fall and Spring semesters) this amount represents 60% of the total current tuition cost of the UNT master’s program. The Scholarships will be awarded through the Nevada State Library and Archives.

  • Priority consideration will be given to applicants admitted to the program who further qualify in one of the following categories:

    • minority participants

    • those with a demonstrated commitment to working in a rural setting

    • those with a demonstrated commitment to working as a children’s librarian

    • those in possession of a bachelor’s degree in a non-liberal arts discipline

  • Specialized weekend seminars on cutting edge library and information science topics will be held (Attendance is mandatory for scholarship recipients):

    • Summer 2008 (Mountain Plains Library Association joint conference with the Utah Library Association Conference to be held Spring 2008, in Salt Lake City, UT)

    • Fall 2008 (Nevada Library Association Conference likely to be held in southern Nevada in Fall 2008)

  • 120 hour paid and unpaid internship opportunities

  • A mentor program to match scholars with a recent master's graduate.

  • Travel allowance to attend two ALA chapter annual conferences - Mountain Plains Library Association joint conference with the Utah Library Association Conference and the Nevada Library Association Conference.

  • Reimbursement for student membership dues to ALA (including one division of the scholars choice) and the ALA state chapter.

APPLICATION DEADLINES

To be eligible for consideration, only applicants in the Nevada Cohort of the University of North Texas School of Library and Information Sciences master's program may apply for this scholarship.

Scholarship applications and all supporting documents must be received by the University of North Texas School of Library and Information Sciences by the April 30, 2007

Please review the application instructions and start collecting supporting materials well before the deadline. Completed application packets, submitted to the University of North Texas School of Library and Information Sciences, must be postmarked no later than April 30, 2007.

CRITERIA FOR THE AWARD AND APPLICATION MATERIALS

To be considered for the scholarship award, each applicants completed application package must meet the following criteria and include the following materials:

  • Submit the completed UNT/IMLS Scholarship Application.
  • Submit a copy of all transcripts (official or unofficial - a copy of an official transcript is acceptable) of your complete college, graduate, or professional school scholastic record.
  • Submit three letters of recommendation. You should ask faculty members or employers who have had an opportunity to evaluate you carefully and individually over a sufficient period of time to make a reasonable evaluation. Your letters of recommendation must include one from your immediate supervisor or your supervisor’s immediate administrator or manager. Your recommenders should return their letters to you in sealed, signed envelopes to be mailed, unopened, with your paper application materials.
  • A copy of your test scores
    • Graduate Record Exam
    • Miller's Analogy Test)
  • Submit your personal statement.

The completed application package must include all requirements delineated ( the UNT/IMLS Scholarship Application, three letters of recommendation, the personal statement, report of test scores, and all academic transcripts). The application materials must be postmarked by the application deadlines.
