 Master's Admission Checklist

Thank you for your interest in the UNT School of Library and Information Science Masters program.

All new students are required to begin their studies with the SLIS 5000 course (Introduction to Information Professions). The next SLIS 5000 Institute will be in Houston, Texas on January 11, 2003. SLIS 5000 will also be offered in a face-to-face classroom in the Spring of 2003.

Admissions to this Institute are limited and applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis.  The following is a checklist of the admissions process:

  1. Apply to the UNT Toulouse School of Graduate Studies.  You need to complete the Graduate School minimum qualifications before you will be considered for admission to the School of Library and Information Sciences.

  2. Apply to SLIS.  Forms are available online.

  3. If your application is complete or very near complete, SLIS will contact you to inquire about your plans to enroll in the next semester’s Institute. You will be added to an email listserv where you can communicate with other students attending the same Institute and find out more about Institute logistics. Being added to the email listserv means that we are holding a place for you in the Institute, not that you have registered. People who have been added to the email listserv will have first priority when registering for classes. Other students will be allowed to register as space permits.

  4. Admitted students will be added to a limited cohort of students for the semester in which they intend to enroll until the cohort is filled.  Admitted students are then put on a waiting list.  You may apply now to reserve your place in the Spring or Summer 2003 cohorts!

  5. You will be added on to an email listserv through which you will receive regular information about your cohort and Institute.  Through this listserv you will also be able to communicate with other students and learn the logistical details about your cohort.  Each Institute will also have a Website where the Institute details are posted.

  6. You should make sure that you have the minimum level of technology skills and that your hardware and software is up-to-date.

  7. You will be notified in a letter from SLIS the status of your admission and any outstanding items missing from your application. Once you have been accepted to the program, you will receive a second letter that includes an assignment to an advisor based on your intended program of study.

  8. In order to register, you will need restriction codes from your advisor for the courses you are going to take. Fill out an online advising memo and send this to your advisor to obtain the restriction codes.

  9. All registration at UNT is done over the Internet using WebReg or the telephone via Teleregistration. The easiest and most convenient method of registering is to use the WebReg system. By using WebReg, you can register for classes, view your schedule or tuition bill, and make fee payments. If you’ve never used WebReg before, you’ll want to first check the SLIS WebReg How-to <http://www.unt.edu/slis/WebReg/WebReg_howto.htm> page that will help you collect all the various bits of information you will need to access WebReg.

All new students should start with 5000 (Introduction to the Information Professions). This can be taken with either or both of the other two core courses, 5600 (Introduction to Information Access and Retrieval) and 5200 (Introduction to Information Organization). See the course descriptions <http://www.unt.edu/slis/courses/courses.htm>. SLIS 5600 and 5200 can be taken in an Institute format (3 days and 4 days respectively) or in a traditional classroom setting for those in the Denton/Dallas area.
