General Program of Study  

School of Library and Information Sciences Required Core Courses (9 Hours)
SLIS 5000 – Introduction to the Information Profession (1 hour)
SLIS 5200 – Introduction to Information Organization (4 hours)
SLIS 5600 – Introduction to Information and Access Retrieval (4 hours)

The general program of study is intended to prepare graduates to succeed in a wide range of library and information science positions.  In addition to the three core classes, the student should take at least one of the courses in each of the following five categories plus four electives, making a total of 12 courses and 36 semester hours:

I.  Human Information Behavior (Cognitive, Organizational, and Societal Issues)

SLIS 5080 – Research Methods and Analysis
SLIS 5040 – Human Information Behavior

II.  Information Technologies
SLIS 5711 – Internet Applications, Services, & Management for Information Professionals
SLIS 5712 – Horizon Technologies for Library and Information Centers
SLIS 5713 – Telecommunications for Information Professionals
SLIS 5714 – Website Development
SLIS 5715 – Digital Imaging for Information Professionals
SLIS 5720 - Instructional Materials Production and Use
SLIS 5750 – Managing Library Automation Projects

III.  Management and Administration
SLIS 5300 – Management of Information Agencies
SLIS 5302 – Advanced Management of Information Agencies
SLIS 5303 – Financial and Human Resource Management in Information Agencies
SLIS 5305 – Systems Analysis and Design
SLIS 5306 – Project Management for Information Systems

V.  Retrieval and Access

The General Program of Study student must also complete 120 hours of practicum or have 6 months of verifiable library experience at the professional level.  During the final semester before graduation, the student will enroll in the Capstone program.  Neither is counted for degree credit.
