Health Informatics Specialist - Program of Study

Health Informatics Program homepage

Opportunities for health sciences librarians as well as others interested in health information management are diverse and challenging, ranging from very specialized kinds of positions in large research or teaching institutions to personalized service roles in small hospital libraries and extensive information services in pharmaceutical companies or interacting with other health care providers through medical informatics.  The program focuses on the fundamental concepts and activities in health information processing, including health storage and retrieval system, clinical decision support, clinical research and issues in health care financing, and legal, ethical, and philosophical concerns in health informatics.

Note: Students may take up to 6 hours in UNT’s School of Public Health with the consent of the advisor and instructor. Also, other courses may be selected with the approval of the student’s advisor.  

Required Proficiencies

Computer Literacy: May be satisfied by testing, experience, or course work such as SLIS 5710, Information Technology*

Field Experience: May be satisfied by prior work experience or SLIS 5090, Practicum and Field Study*.  Numerous opportunities are available to meet this requirement such as advanced digital imaging work.

* Not counted for degree credit
