BY-LAWS
ARTICLE I: DUES
Section 1: Payment of Dues
- Membership dues are applicable to the calendar year and are due by March 1 of each year. Notices of renewal will be mailed out by the secretary-treasurer in January of each year.
- Only members whose dues have been paid for the current year may vote or be nominated for appointment to an office in the Society.
Section 2: Schedule of Dues
Membership dues shall be as follows:
Active members: $25.00 per year
Life members:
$1000.00 - Dean's Club (names will be included on plaque at the School)
$ 250.00 - Regular Life Membership
(payment of $125 may be paid for two consecutive years)Newly awarded degree/certificate recipients: $10.00 for first year.
ARTICLE II: NOMINATIONS AND ELECTIONS
Section 1: Nominations
- The President of the Society shall appoint a nominating committee consisting of a chairperson and two members, no one of whom shall be a member of the Executive Board.
- The Nominating Committee shall nominate one candidate for all elective offices provided for in the Constitution.
Section 2: Elections
- At the Spring meeting of the Society at the Texas Library Association Annual Conference, the Nominating Committee shall present its report to the membership. Additional nominations may be made from the floor.
- Official ballots containing nominees of the Nominating Committee and any others, nominated in accordance with the procedure outlined above, along with biographical data, shall be mailed to membership within ten days after the Spring meeting.
- Ballots shall be returned to the Executive Board on or before the date specified on the ballot. Those received with postmarks of a later date will not be counted.
- The ballot count shall be certified by the Nominating Committee and the results of the election shall be published in the next issue of the newsletter of the School of Library and Information Sciences.
- A plurality of votes cast elects; a tie vote shall be resolved by the Executive Board.
ARTICLE III: FUNDS
Section 1: Management of Funds
All funds shall be in the custody of the Executive Board.
Section 2: Endowment Fund
All receipts from life memberships and all gifts for endowment purposes shall be placed in the Lady Kate Medders Endowment Fund.
Section 3: SLIS Alumni Society Fund
All funds from lifetime memberships and $15.00 from annual memberships will be used for the alumni scholarship fund. The remaining funds will go to the SLIS Alumni Society Fund. This fund shall be the working capital of the Society and can be expended on activities and programs of the Society so identified by the Executive Board, or transferred into the Endowment Fund.
ARTICLE IV: SERVICE ACTIVITIES
Section 1: Annual Alumni Dinner
- The Executive Board shall appoint an Alumni Dinner Committee to assist the School in arranging the event.
- The alumni dinner will take place at the Texas Library Association Annual Conference.
Section 2: Homecoming Activities
The Executive Board shall appoint a Homecoming Committee to assist the School in arranging appropriate events.
Section 3: Other Service Activities
The Society shall assist the School in recruitment, fundraising, and other activities as identified by the Dean.
ARTICLE V: DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS AWARD
Section 1: Purpose
The purpose of the School of Library and Information Sciences Alumni Society Distinguished Alumnus Award is to provide recognition for outstanding achievements in library and information science.
Section 2: Eligibility
- To be eligible for the Award, the individual must have received a degree or certification from the School of Library and Information Sciences at the University of North Texas.
- The nominee shall exhibit excellence in performance, contribution to the profession at the local, regional, state and/or national level(s), and in dedication to service.
- The nominee must be living and may receive the award only once.
Section 3: The Award
- The Award shall consist of a certificate presented to the recipient.
- The recipient's name shall be inscribed on the School of Library and Information Sciences Alumni Society Distinguished Alumnus Award plaque. The plaque will remain on open display at the School of Library and Information Sciences.
- There shall be no more than one Distinguished Alumnus Award given in any one year.
- The Distinguished Alumni Award Committee may recommend that the Award not be given in any one year.
- The Award is presented at the Annual Alumni Dinner held during the annual conference of the Texas Library Association. The recipient also receives recognition at the University's Honors Day ceremony.
Section 4: Nominations
- Nominations may be submitted by any member of the School of Library and Information Sciences Alumni Society or by a current or former member of the faculty of the School.
- Members of the Distinguished Alumnus Award Committee may not place names in nomination nor may their names be placed in nomination.
- All nominations must be made in writing and be accompanied by biographical information and a statement outlining the nominee's qualifications for this Award.
- A call for nominations will be included in the fall issue of the newsletter of the School of Library and Information Sciences.
Section 5: The Distinguished Alumnus Award Committee
- The Distinguished Alumnus Award Committee shall consist of three members appointed by the President of the Society and two members of the Faculty elected by the Faculty.
- The committee will elect its own chair.
