of the University of North Texas


CONSTITUTION, DRAFT NOVEMBER 1996
(Update from October 1981)

ARTICLE I: NAME

The name of the society shall be the School of Library and Information Sciences Alumni Society of the University of North Texas.

ARTICLE II: PURPOSE

The purpose of this Society shall be to advance the interests of the School and promote a closer association between the School and its Alumni.

ARTICLE III: MEMBERSHIP

Anyone who has been awarded a degree or certificate from the University of North Texas School of Library and Information Sciences is eligible for membership in the Society.  Faculty and other friends of the School, as recommended by the Dean, are also eligible.  Honorary membership may be extended to individuals by unanimous vote of the Executive Board.

ARTICLE IV: ADMINISTRATION

Section 1: Officers

  1. The officers of this Society shall be president, president-elect, secretary-treasurer, and one member-at-large.
  2. Officers shall be nominated and elected in the manner specified in the By-laws and shall serve until they are replaced by their duly-elected successors.
  3. Officers shall serve for a period of one year beginning at the end of the Texas Library Association conference.
  4. Vacancies in an office shall be filled by the Executive board; the person so appointed shall serve only until replaced by the election.

Section 2: SLIS Faculty Liaison

A SLIS faculty member shall be requested to serve as a liaison between the Society and the SLIS.  This appointment shall be made by the Executive Board for an indefinite period and shall terminate at the request of either the liaison or the Executive Board.

Section 3: The Executive Board

  1. The Executive Board of the Society shall consist of president, president-elect, secretary-treasurer, member-at-large, and immediate past-president of the Society.  The SLIS Faculty liaison and the SLIS External Affairs Officer shall serve on the Board as non-voting members.
  2. The Executive Board shall have the power to carry on the business of the Society between regular membership meetings.  Any change to the Constitution or By-Laws must be approved by the membership, either through mail votes or regular or special membership meetings.
  3. The Executive Board shall have the power to approve the establishment of chapters in specific locations when petitioned by 15 current Society members residing in that location.
  4. Four of the five members present shall constitute a quorum of the Executive Board.

ARTICLE V: BUSINESS MEETINGS

Section 1: Time of Meetings

  1. There shall be two regular business meetings of the Society.  The Spring meeting is held during each annual conference of the Texas Library Association in its convention city, and the Fall meeting is held during the annual Homecoming celebration of the University of North Texas in Denton.
  2. Special membership meetings of the Society may be called by the Executive Board.  The purpose of special meetings must be specified.
  3. Due notice of the time and place of all membership meetings shall be given to members by the secretary-treasurer.

Section 2: Quorum

Fifteen members shall constitute a quorum at all membership meetings.

ARTICLE VI: AMENDMENTS TO THE CONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS

Proposed amendments to this constitution or to the By-laws of the Society must be submitted in writing to the Executive Board.  A mail vote shall be conducted and a majority of membership voting shall decide the question.
