presents the 2001
Melvil Dewey Medal
to
Dr. Herman L. Totten
For
creative professional leadership in management not only in his teaching
at North Texas University but also as the original planner and developer
of the curriculum for the Texas State Library’s Small Library
Management Program, which provides training for paraprofessionals in
small public Libraries, which do not have degreed librarians. As a
magnetic teacher, he has had a significant impact on the management of
libraries in the State of Texas. He was the first professor to put
his management course on the Web; For his leadership in library
education both as a dedicated and a distinguished chair of the ALA
Committee on Accreditation which developed the 1992 standards, he is
described as “the most committed academic scholar ever to have focused
on issues related to accreditation…” Having served on 19
accreditation visits as a team member and/or chair and is considered to
have a remarkable ability to apply the accreditation standards fairly
and judiciously;
For his Contribution to
scholarship, teaching, and in recognition of his influential leadership
in library and information science education as reflected in his
positions as Associate Dean, College of Library and Information Science,
University of Kentucky, Professor and Dean, School of Librarianship
University of Oregon, Regent Professor and Associate Dean, School of
Library and Information Sciences, North Texas University. Among
his many awards, he is the recipient of the 1999 Association for Library
and Information Science Education (ALISE)
Outstanding Teacher Award. His sphere of influence is continuing
to orbit, for he is the newly elected president of the Texas Library
Association. Like Melvil Dewey, Dr. Herman L. Totten is a major
force in library education. For being a renowned scholar, a
prolific writer with an inventive mind sharing creative tools and
techniques to strengthen Librarianship, the American Library Association
bestows upon him its Melvil Dewey Medal.
