HERMAN L. TOTTEN VOTED PRESIDENT-ELECT OF
THE TEXAS LIBRARY ASSOCIATION
Herman L. Totten, Associate
Dean, School of Library and Information Sciences, University of North
Texas, has been voted President-Elect of the Texas Library
Association. Dr. Totten is nationally recognized as an expert on
library education and diversity issues in libraries. He has
published extensively and was the recipient of the 1999 Outstanding
Teacher Award from the Association of Library and Information Science
Educators.
Dr. Totten holds a Ph.D. and
Master's in Library Science from the University of Oklahoma. Prior
to his current position, which he has held since 1996, Dr. Totten served
as a professor at the University of North Texas, the University of Oregon,
the University of Kentucky, and Wiley College.
“Advances in technology
offer many benefits in generating and disseminating information,”
commented Dr. Totten. “However, cooperation and coordination among
the people of the profession, within Texas and beyond its borders, will be
the leading force in coping with the challenges and opportunities raised
by new technology.”
Dr. Totten joined the
Texas Library Association Executive Board at the close of the TLA Annual
Conference, April 14, in Houston. He will assume leadership of the
7,200-member association in April, 2001. The Texas
Library Association is a non-profit, educational organization formed in
1902 to promote library service in Texas. The members of the
association include school, public, academic, and special librarians and
