Biography

Herman L. Totten

Herman L. Totten has been on the University of North Texas faculty since 1977.  Presently he serves as UNT Regents Professor and as Associate Dean for the School of Library and Information Sciences. His previous positions include Librarian and Academic Dean, Wiley College; Associate Professor and Associate Dean, University of Kentucky; and Professor and Dean, University of Oregon. 

Dr. Totten is a Past President of the Texas Library Association (TLA), the nation’s largest state library association. During his more than 29 years as a member of TLA, he has served as Chair and a member of many committees. From 1993-95, he served as Chair of the Texas State Library Joint Committee for Statewide Library Planning.

He is a life member of the American Library Association (ALA), where he has served as Chair of the ALA Committee on Accreditation and Chair of the ALA Committee on Minority Concerns. He currently an active member of the ALA Council and several ALA  divisions. 

Dr. Totten has conducted workshops for the Texas State Library, where he was an original planner and developer of the curriculum for the Small Library Management Program, which trains and certifies county librarians. He has also conducted numerous workshops on library management, nonprint cataloging and classification, and stress management for the North Texas Library System and seven other Texas regional library systems as well as for library systems in Arkansas, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Oregon.  He has served as a visiting faculty member at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Washington. 

He was the featured High Profile: in the February 10, 2002 edition of the Dallas Morning News. He was appointed Trustee to ARMA International Educational Board of Trustees, June 30, 2001 and Summer Commencement Speaker, University of North Texas, August 12, 2001.

Among his many awards and honors are the 2001 ALA Melvil Dewey Award; the 1999 Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) Outstanding Teacher Award; the 1992 ALA Black Caucus Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Library and Information Science Education; and the 1991 ALISE Award for Professional Contributions to Library and Information Science Education. In 1991 he was designated a Regents Professor at the University of North Texas and was also given the Award of Merit for the Outstanding Alumnus by the Alumni Association of the School of Library and Information Science, University of Oklahoma. 

Professor Totten was a Southern Education Fellow, and a Fellow in the Academic Administration Internship Program of the American Council on Education. In addition, he is a member of the Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity, the Beta Phi Mu International Library Science Honor Fraternity, and the Phi Delta Kappa National Honor Society. 

He received his BA degree with honors from Wiley College and his MLS and Ph.D. degrees in the fields of library and information science from the University of Oklahoma.
