PowerPoint 97 - Creating a Slide Show

Final Preparation to Run Slide Show

PREPARING YOUR PRESENTATION

PowerPoint provides several aids for preparing your presentation after you have created your slides.

The Slide Sorter view shows thumbnail sketches of your slides and allows you to rearrange them by dragging and dropping. You can hide slides that you may not want to show to every audience. You can choose various transitions between slides. You can rehearse how long you are going to talk for each slide and set automatic timing for the amount of time required.

Slide Sorter

At the bottom left of the screen, click the Slide Sorter View button. The Slide Sorter appears, showing thumbnails of all of your slides.

REMEMBER: You can change the look of the presentation at any time by changing the template, using the Template button in the lower right screen.

Saving

Be sure to save often and keep updating and saving.

Moving Slides

Look at the order of the slides. If you can’t see all the slides at one time, choose 50% from the Zoom Control drop-down list.

To change the order, click and hold down mouse button on Slide 4, and drag it between Slides 2 and 3.

Hiding Slides

You may not want to show all the slides to every audience, so if you Hide a slide, you can decide during the presentation whether or not to show it. To hide a slide, select the slide, by clicking on it. Then click the Hide Slide tool icon on the Slide Sorter toolbar. Notice that the number below appears with a slash mark through it to indicate it will be hidden during the slide show presentation.

Transitioning Slides

To set the type of transition that appear when slides are changed during the slide show presentation, first set the default setting, by selecting from the menu, EDIT, SELECT ALL.

In the Transition Effects drop-down menu, choose RANDOM TRANSITION. A Transition Effect icon appears at the lower-left corner of each slide thumbnail.

Click the Transition Effect icon under the slide to preview the transition effects.

Change the timing to automatically move after 10 seconds.

Click outside of the slides to deselect the slides.

Slide Set Up

Choose Slide Show, Set Up Show. The Set Up Show dialog box appears.

Set the Show Type, the Slides to use, and to Advance Slide options to either manually advance regardless of how the automatic timings are set, or to use the slide timings.

IMPORTANT: On any slide, whether it has a set timing or not, you can click the normal mouse button to go to the next slide and the opposite side mouse button to go back to the previous slide.

Drawing Pen

When running the slide show, you can use the Drawing Pen by clicking the opposite side mouse button, and selecting Pen.

After selecting the Pen option, hold down the normal mouse button and draw, releasing the mouse button when you finish a line, depressing when you want to start another.

Click the opposite side mouse button again and select Arrow to deselect the pen.

Hidden Slide Icon

If you have set up any slides as hidden, the slide before will have an extra icon - the Hidden Slide Icon, in the lower right of the screen.

This indicates the next slide is hidden, and you can click the icon to show the hidden slide.

Once the slide show is finished running, PowerPoint will return to the Slide Sorter View, where you began.  Be sure to save often after making changes.
