PowerPoint 97 - Creating a Slide Show

Using the Slide Sorter

Look at What You’ve Done So Far

At the bottom left of your screen, above the status bar showing the slide number, are several icons. They designate the various views to work in.
  1. The first one is a picture of a single slide and denotes working in SLIDE mode. This is the mode you are currently working in.
  2. The second button has several lines and is OUTLINE mode. When you switch to outline mode you can see the text you have typed in order of heading, subheading, and bulleted list.
  3. The third button is the SLIDE SORTER. You can see all the slides you have created with this button, rearrange them, and set up the transition from one slide to the next for the slide show.
  4. The fourth button is the NOTES PAGE view. This will show not only the slide, but also any speaker notes you have written about the slide.
  5. The fifth button is the SLIDE SHOW, and will start the slide show from the slide you are in.

To see what you have done so far, use the SLIDE SORTER view.

From the SLIDE SORTER, you can rearrange the slides by pointing and holding down the mouse button on Slide 3 and moving it over Slide 2. It will swap places. Move it back again.

To have the slides transition from one to the next

To have the slides transition from one to the next, click on the first slide to select it.  Point to the icon to the left of the box stating "NO TRANSITION" to get the TRANSITION dialog box.  Click on the down arrow after "No Transition" to get a list of the different transition types, like fades and wipes.

Choose a transition effect like "BLINDS VERTICAL".  Then choose whether the transition is to move slow, medium or fast from slide 1 to 2.  Then choose whether to advance to the next slide with a mouse click or automatically after X number of seconds.

When a selection is made, the sample in the dialog box shows the results of the selections.  Click the picture in the Preview box to see the transition again.

You can make transition decisions for each slide in the sorter.  The transition icon is added below the slide in Slide Sorter view to show that you've set a transition for this slide.

To Use Build Effect for Bulleted Slides

The BUILD selections are located to the left of the box showing "NO BUILD EFFECT".

A build slide is one in which each bullet point in the main text is revealed one at a time during a slide show. Bullets can fly in from the top or bottom, checkerboard in, dissolve, and so on.

If you want the point to appear in a special way, select the visual effect you want in the Effect box.

An icon will appear below the slide in the slide sorter if build effects are selected.

Hide Slide

The next icon (picture of a slide with a line through it) is the Hide Slide icon. It lets you hide a slide so that you can bypass it during an electronic slide show.

If you hide it, an icon appears in the lower right corner of the slide that precedes it in your slide show. Then, if you decide you want to show the hidden slide, you can click that icon.

Rehearse Timing

Lets you set slide timings to be used during an electronic slide show. When you use the rehearsal feature, PowerPoint keeps track of the amount of time each slide is on the screen and sets the time accordingly.

To see the results of the transitions and builds

Play the slide show by selecting the button at the bottom of the screen that looks like a mini-TV with lines on it. Make sure you are at the first slide in the slide sorter screen. The slide show will start playing from wherever the cursor is located.
