Computer Science & Engineering

Bachelor's degree program

Career potential

Very few areas in modern society are untouched by computer science. Computer science is present in every field, from health care, telecommunications and entertainment to transportation, education and defense. The computer science graduate has many career choices. Among them are well-paid positions like database analyst, systems programmer, systems analyst, software engineer, security specialist and many others.

Hands-on experience

Students have many opportunities for hands-on learning through a variety of assignments in the computer science program. Internship opportunities may also be available, allowing students to apply their knowledge and gain practical experience in a professional setting.

Computer science

The bachelor's degree programs in computer science at the UNT Dallas Campus are offered at the request of residents of southern Dallas and northern Ellis counties. Students may choose to earn a bachelor of science degree or a bachelor of arts degree. The bachelor of science program requires more mathematics and computer science classes and allows students to substitute technical writing courses for foreign language courses. For the bachelor of arts program, students are required to complete 14 hours of freshman- and sophomore-level foreign language courses. Both programs help students develop expertise in information technology and learn how to become good communicators.

Computer science majors acquire a background in the fundamental areas of computer science: computer systems, organization and architecture, algorithms and data structures, principles of software design, and operating systems. The computer science student, in addition to acquiring knowledge in these fundamental areas, selects and completes at least five additional advanced computer science courses, such as games programming, database design, networking or artificial intelligence.

In support of this, the computer science program provides its students with a well-rounded education that includes 47 hours of university core courses and a significant amount of course work in mathematics, the physical and life sciences, and oral and written communication.

UNT computer science professors are experts in their fields and have written hundreds of books and articles. The program is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology/Computing Accreditation Commission [184 North Street, Stamford, Conn. 06901, telephone (203) 975-1117].

Computer engineering

The bachelor of science in computer engineering is designed for students who wish to specialize in computer hardware, micro controllers, digital signal processing and process control systems. Computer engineering students are exposed to both theoretical and practical issues of both hardware and software in laboratories with state-of-the-art equipment. The program provides a strong engineering background with an understanding of the principles and techniques of computer science. The emphasis of the computer engineering program is on the design and implementation of hardware and software for engineering applications. Graduates will be eligible to seek the professional engineering license.

Charting the path to your degree or certification

Because the UNT Dallas Campus offers only upper-division (junior- and senior-level) courses, you will need to take courses in the core curriculum - required of all undergraduates - at UNT in Denton, a two-year college or another institution. Computer science students should be proficient in calculus, have a year of introductory programming experience and have a working knowledge of C++.

The computer science faculty and staff pride themselves on the level of interest they take in their students. Once you have been admitted, you should meet with an adviser, who will work with you in putting together a degree plan.

Library resources

The virtual library at the UNT Dallas Campus provides electronic access to several thousand periodicals, more than 400 electronic databases and a collection of thousands of books in digital format that will continue to grow. A core print collection of frequently used reference books is available on site.

An on-site staff of two professional librarians and several student assistants provides reference service. Additional reference service is available from librarians on the Denton campus. An online virtual reference desk chat room is available to students needing information from the Denton campus library system. The reference desk chat room allows users to interact directly with librarians in real time. Students may also work with Denton campus librarians via e-mail and telephone. Document delivery services from the UNT library system in Denton are provided for non-electronic resources.

UNT Dallas Campus

The UNT Dallas Campus offers junior-, senior- and graduate-level courses leading to bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. The Dallas Campus also offers programs leading to certifications and endorsements, and courses for career advancement. Courses and programs offered are of the same high quality as those offered at UNT in Denton and are taught by faculty from both the Dallas and Denton campuses. Dallas Campus students earn their degree from the University of North Texas.

The UNT Dallas Campus features the region's first virtual library, state-of-the-art classrooms, computer labs with Internet access and other services to help students achieve success.

The Dallas Campus is conveniently located at 7300 Houston School Road, north of I-20 and east of I-35E, and is accessible by public transportation. The building is the first of many planned for the 264-acrea campus site that will become the University of North Texas at Dallas - Dallas' first public university and the third institution in the UNT System.
