The library is proud to welcome four outstanding new members of the Virtual Library staff. Larry Phillips, Cynthia James, JungWon Yoon and Marie Aschkar, all library and information science graduate students, will be working the reference desk, assisting students in the lab, and will be undertaking the daunting task of continuing the many and varied projects in the library. Along with their responsibilities at the library and their studies, Larry is also a fire fighter for the Duncanville Fire Department, Marie works a full time job and raises a full time family, Won is a doctoral student, and Cynthia comes with experiences from both an executive level tenure in retail and education. They're all incredible people who are committed to service, and we're very proud to have them aboard. See the New Staff Members section in this newsletter for more information.
This semester four members of the library staff moved on to new phases in their lives. Marc Marchand left to take the position of Director of the Library at Cedar Creek Lake, Ramon Herrera became the LAN Manager for the Grand Prairie I.S.D., Susie Kutchi became the newest member of the University of Texas at Dallas' McDermott Library, and Brian Kemp got married after completing his Masters degree in December and moved with his new bride to Austin. The legacy that they left behind here at UNT Dallas library is invaluable. They are genuinely missed by their students and especially by their friends and colleagues here. We wish them the very best in their personal and professional endeavors and thank them for all that they have done for us!
Best Southwest Book Fest 2004
On Friday and Saturday, Mar. 26-27, UNT Dallas Library and the public libraries of Cedar Hill, DeSoto, Duncanville and Lancaster hosted the first annual Best Southwest Book Fest at UNT Dallas. Free workshops on writing and publishing featured local and national authors. There were also book signings, book purchases, door prizes, a short-story contest for area high school students, a reception, and a BBQ dinner. Between 200 and 300 festival-goers came from throughout the area. Some of the comments we've received include: "thank you for having the vision to put on the Best Southwest Book Fest! It is another wonderful example of what makes this area special;" "congratulations on providing an excellent learning experience for adults and school children;" "my heart is still ringing little melodies of happiness inside my head;" "the Best Southwest Book Fest on Friday and Saturday was awesome! Thank you and everyone responsible. Please consider making this an annual event." With comments like those, how could we not consider doing this again! As enrollment at UNT Dallas continues to grow, so does the demand for library services and facilities. A second full time librarian position was added to the library staff in the Fall ensuring that there are at least three library staff members on duty throughout the day and often times into the evening as well. Because of the increased use during the evening, the library lab has begun using the computer labs across the hall from the library as overflow during the evening rush. This semester new computer stations are being added to the general access lab, and we are in the process of exploring options for adding new public access terminals to the main library as well as group study rooms and additional study carrels.
Last year the Virtual Library created a WebCT section for two purposes. The first was to use the section as a test bed for future use as a library resource for students to add to their WebCT list of classes that would contain basic library information, discussion forums for class research projects, subject guides to help students with their research, etc., and the second to serve as a virtual means of communication for the library staff. One of the first things to happen was that the Virtual Library staff held its first Virtual Library staff meeting!
The Center for Distributed Learning recommends one year for developing a WebCT course, and after several months of development the staff communication side of the section is being moved to its own section and the live testing phase of the WebCT Virtual Library section for UNT Dallas students is drawing near. If you would like to be a part of this project please contact the library or send inquiries to Marc Marchand at mmarchand@scd.unt.edu.
Leora Kemp, Department Head and Librarian at UNT Dallas Library, has been acting as the historian for UNT Dallas collecting any and all materials relating to the growth and evolution of UNT Dallas. These materials have recently been indexed, archived, bound, and organized into a 9 volume collection that includes newsletters, newspaper articles and advertisements, write ups, blue prints, photographs, memos, etc. beginning with the October 1998 Texas Higher Education Coordinating Report of the Special Committee on Higher Education in Southern Dallas County spearheaded by Texas State Senator Royce West continuing up to the present. The collection has become an important tool for UNT Dallas staff and will assuredly serve as a fascinating resource for students, faculty, staff, and the community for years to come.
The library wants to hear from you. We're beginning to collect stories from our patrons about ways that the library has benefited you, and we would love for you to share your story with us. If you would like to share your story please ask a library staff member for a form. Our continued success is greatly dependent on your input.
Each newsletter we will feature a different subject designed specifically for courses offered at UNT Dallas that contains valuable resources for that subject offered at UNT Dallas Library for students and faculty. Many other subject guides are available now in the library or on the website (www.unt.edu/unt-dallas/librarysg.htm).
This semester we are proud to feature the Educational Administration subject guide.
Far too often students, and faculty as well, are surprised to discover the vast electronic resources available to them after attending a library instruction session. The primary problem is that one doesn't know what one doesn't know. By scheduling a library instruction session for you and your class you're opening up a whole new world of learning possibilities and access to tools that will make the learning process a much richer and enjoyable experience. Remember that two of the primary mission objectives of UNT Dallas Virtual Library are instruction and education and that both individual and group instruction sessions are available upon request. Contact the library if you have any questions.
Information professionals in the library field are no longer able to shy away from technology, and the idea of the stereotyped book worm librarian has gone by the wayside. Librarians of today wear many hats and IT management, technical support, troubleshooting, and system development are now included in the repertoire of skills necessary for the information professional to provide services to an ever growing technology-savvy group of students, faculty, staff, and community library users.
UNT Dallas Virtual Library, by its very nature, thrives on providing services to patrons through a medium that can often be daunting to even the most experienced computer users. Continuing education students who may have been out of the classroom for years as well as students, staff, and faculty members who possess a high comfort level in a computer environment can all benefit from the Virtual Library. In fact, while we enjoy assisting people of all skill levels with their information needs through technology, our bread and butter consists of helping beginners. Just let us know how we can help you!
The library staff is comprised of librarians and graduate library students who are all well versed in advanced research techniques. Marc Marchand, a library staff member, often says that he doesn't have to know everything; he just has to know how to find it. That's the mission of every librarian, and the best part about your library is that these professionals are available to you at no cost. Whether you're working on a term paper or are doing high end research for publication let us help get you on the right track. The only bad questions are the ones that are never asked!
From videos, books, articles, and other materials that may come from our library, the Denton library, or your personal collection, the library offers faculty members the ability to put materials on reserve for their students to use. If you have materials that you would like to have put on reserve for your class please contact us, and we'll take care of the rest.
