Dallas-based logistics foundation provides $2,500 in scholarships

DALLAS – The University of North Texas Dallas Campus has received a $2,500 grant from the Texas Logistics Education Foundation (TLEF) to fund five $500 scholarships during the spring 2008 semester for students who enroll in the school’s logistics and supply chain management program.

TLEF is a business-based, non-profit foundation that has been instrumental in bringing logistics education to the North Texas area. E. John Ward, president of the foundation, said the grant is “part of the foundation’s continuing investment in students considering a career in the booming field of logistics and supply chain management.”

“Logistics is already an important business function, and is critical to the future of the entire region,” Ward said. “When students see the opportunity that is here, we are confident that they will join the next generation of logistics professionals.”

Ward is no stranger to the field of logistics. He is also president of Dallas Transfer and Terminal Warehouse and is recognized as a leader in the industry. “Logistics is a great place to make a contribution,” Ward said. “And it pays well, too!”

Scott A. Ames, who coordinates the logistics and supply chain management program at the Dallas Campus, said he is excited by the grant because it represents a big vote of confidence in the new program. “The program began only this fall and is already generating a considerable buzz on the UNT Dallas Campus, as well as throughout the entire area of Southern Dallas,” Ames said.

He said students may apply for the scholarships in the campus financial aid office. Awards will be based upon a sincere commitment to logistics and supply chain management as a career choice and upon financial need.

“We are building an excellent program with nearly unlimited growth potential for everyone involved,” Ames said.

A recent survey of the starting salaries of logistics professionals by Ted Farris, a Fulbright Scholar and associate professor of marketing and logistics in the College of Business Administration at the UNT flagship in Denton, indicated that graduates in the field accept an average starting salary of slightly more than $48,000.

The UNT Dallas Campus, which operates under the authority of the University of North Texas in Denton, currently offers junior-, senior- and graduate-level courses leading to bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Once freestanding, the University of North Texas at Dallas will begin recruiting its first freshman class for admission in fall 2009.
