DALLAS – U.S. Air Force Col. (Ret.) Sidney Gutiérrez, a former NASA astronaut, will speak at the University of North Texas Dallas Campus as part of the annual Leadership Speaker Series on Saturday, April 12, at 11 a.m.
The keynote lecture and luncheon is sponsored by the Office of Student Development.
Selected by NASA in May 1984, Gutiérrez became an astronaut in June 1985. In his first technical assignment he served as commander for the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory (SAIL), flying simulated missions to verify Shuttle flight software. Following the Shuttle Challenger accident, he served as an action officer for the associate administrator for space flight at NASA headquarters. A veteran of two Shuttle flights, he has logged more than 488 hours in space.
In September 1994, Gutiérrez retired from the Air Force and NASA and returned to his native home of Albuquerque, N.M. He was inducted into the Space Hall of Fame in 1995.
Gutiérrez received a bachelor of science degree in aeronautical engineering from the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs in 1973. He earned a master of arts degree in management from Webster College in 1977.
Gutiérrez was also a member of the National Collegiate Championship Air Force Academy Parachute Team. He holds a Master Parachutist rating. After graduating from the Academy, he completed pilot training at Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas. He remained there as a T-38 instructor pilot from 1975-77. In 1978, Gutiérrez was assigned to the 7th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Hollomon Air Force Base in Alamagordo, N.M., where he flew the F-15 Eagle.

The UNT Dallas Campus, which operates under the authority of the University of North Texas in Denton, currently offers junior-, senior- and graduate-level courses leading to bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Once freestanding, the University of North Texas at Dallas will begin recruiting its first freshman class for admission in fall 2009.
