Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle speaks at the grand opening of the W.W. Caruth Jr. Police Institute’s offices at the Jack Evans Police Headquarters Building July 23.
DALLAS—The University of North Texas at Dallas W.W. Caruth Jr. Police Institute formally opened its doors with a grand opening July 23.
Local dignitaries joined Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle and his command staff and Caruth Institute Director Robert Taylor and his staff for the open house. Among the guests was Jay Cook, vice president of Communities Foundation of Texas, which provided the $3.5 million grant to fund the Institute.
Before this morning’s grand opening, at the Command Staff Meeting, the Institute’s newest staff member—Associate Director for Training and Education Richard Smith—presented formal plans for a unique lieutenant’s school that will provide advanced leadership training for the Dallas Police Department.
The program is being designed to train a new generation of leaders for the DPD. The first two classes begin August 31, and officers will be able to get college credit if they choose. The leadership program is a partnership between the UNT Dallas, UT Dallas and the DPD.
Guests at the open house toured the Institute’s new offices and also got a look at the new $400,000 Fusion communications command center that links communications between the DPD and numerous local, state and national law enforcement agencies.
The Institute now has eight employees. Five of those are UNT Dallas employees, two are University of Texas at Dallas employees and one is a DPD employee who serves as the liaison between the institute and the Police Department. The Institute’s offices are located in the southeast corner of the Jack Evans Police Headquarters Building.
