DALLAS – According to the unofficial headcount after the 2008 spring census date (the semester’s 12th day of classes), spring-to-spring enrollment at the University of North Texas Dallas Campus rose to 1,844 students, a 16 percent increase over the enrollment of 1,598 students in the spring 2007 semester.
Full-time equivalent student numbers also rose over the previous spring to 766.3. That figure represents a 20 percent increase over the 640 FTE of spring 2007.
Most notable for the UNT Dallas Campus, which in January 2007 occupied a new, 76,000 square foot facility on the future landsite of UNT Dallas, was the rise in the number of students taking classes exclusively at the UNT Dallas Campus. That number rose from 794 in spring 2007 to 1,099 in spring 2008, an increase of 38 percent.
That growth shows that the UNT Dallas Campus is beginning to attract the attention of students who want to earn their degree closer to home, according to Dr. John Ellis Price, provost of the campus. He said new course offerings may have also resulted in more students coming to the campus.
“Our goal is to increase access to education in Southern Dallas and the surrounding region, and I believe that when students seek out affordable education near their places of work and their homes, the UNT Dallas Campus will continue to be a logical choice,” Price said.
The first permanent building on the UNT Dallas Campus site was occupied in January 2007. The building sits on 264 acres near the intersection of I-35E and I-20 on Houston School Road. Construction of that building was made possible by a state bond initiative of $25.5 million. Construction on a second building is scheduled to begin by fall 2009.
In addition to faculty who teach from the UNT flagship in Denton, the Dallas campus has 27 faculty with plans to increase that number to 45 (an increase of 18) by the beginning of the 2008-2009 academic year.
Until the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board verifies enrollment numbers and certifies them official later, all enrollment statistics are unofficial, 12th class day numbers.
The UNT Dallas Campus, which operates under the authority of the University of North Texas in Denton, currently offers junior-, senior- and graduate-level courses leading to bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Once freestanding, the University of North Texas at Dallas will begin recruiting its first freshman class for admission in fall 2009.
